95 850 Trouble Attaching Manual Shift Cables

Greetings all,

I'm trying to install a manual shifter but I can't figure out how to attach the cables to the shifter. The cables use a ball and socket type connection with the sockets on the ends of the cables and the ball ends on the shifter. Any tips for getting these connected?

I've never had them off of the shifter end of things but what Volvo typically does with the socket type connections is to have a tiny retainer pin that slips in toward the cable side of the socket, under the ball, to hold things in place.

Hmm...

Looking at this diagram I don't see any retaining pins pictured. As far as I can tell the ball has to be pushed into the socket far enough for it to clip in place. No one has mentioned this being difficult in any of the M56 swap threads so I expected them to go in fairly easily.

They may just be spring loaded and simply require a good smack to get them to engage.

Placing the socket of the cable against the ball you can use a pair of angled needle nose pliers to force the two together. The ball will then pop into the socket. It only took a matter of seconds once I figured out this method.

I'm looking to change a shifter and don't want to force anything. I think the cables just pop off the ball part on the shifter but don't want to break anything. I thought I would ask here before forcing them to pop off.


Edit: they just pop off. I took a long 3/8 wrench, slipped it in between and they came off with little effort.
