2000 v70 timing marks

Post by Mattvh »

I am trying to set timing marks on 2000 v70 Volvo. I am having a hard time with crank marks. Notice a few videos on 2001 and on or models around 1998. Are the 2000 to 2001 models the same. mine has two dots on the crank. Not sure if they should be at 1200 noon, or if there is a mark on engine block. Thank you

Your 2000 is the last of the Millennium P80 models, known affectionately here as 'the bastards'

Ill try to find the (non-TDC) timing mark picture and post. You are looking for two small lines that are different from the other sprocket teeth on the crankshaft - its hard to see but once you see it is is obvious

Thank you. With crank markings, it looks like there is a mark on the engine side and two marks on the crank. Would that be around 12:00 o’clock, or a little before or after? Thank you for the pic.

As usual, abscate's responses are right on.

The words I'd use to describe the crank marking is that it's a scratch down in the valley between two teeth of the sprocket. I was AMAZED at how "hidden in plain sight" it was. Align the top two marks then with a flashlight and a "long throw" magnifying glass (if necessary) look at the 12 o'clock position.

Honestly, I asked myself, "Are they -_-_ing kidding me?".

I repeatedly looked at the adjacent "valleys" to make certain they matched. The one in the middle (the timing mark) was the only one with such an incosistancy. A lot of words, I know, but I got it right and you will too.

Thank you again. I purchased the car for $500.00. Owner said the cam idealer broke in drive way at start. They replaced cam idealer and tried to start. The cam marks were of. I reset the marks, what I believe was wrong looking at picture, so we’ll reset when I get home from work. Not sure if I/they did damage by not having trimming marks set properly. Engine does turn over free.

Ah. you have to stop there and do a compression test after you get the timing belt in the right place. If the engine was running hard when the belt breaks, the valves get bent and the cylinder head has to come off. A compression test will tell you where you are.
