I have to step in here and defend the Pilots. I had Pilot Super Sports on my old Fiesta and they were great tires...for sporting applications. Lots of grip, good wet performance, decent treadwear for soft tires, quiet enough on the highway. Probably not the best-suited to an S80, but good tires in their own right.

I have a pair to put on the front my one of my S60s (already has them on the back) and I've heard nothing but good about Pilot Sports.

That won't be a problem when I get to work on a hybrid 19t... my do88 IC didn't make the difference I was hoping for, likely due to my junk turbo!

The Pilot Sport did not have near the traction as the Primacy 3 on dry pavement causing unwanted wheel spin on moderately hard accelerations and were really prone to overnight flat spots causing the first 10 minutes of driving like riding in a hay wagon. Other than that I'm sure they are fine tires. June

Replaced the rear brakes on the R. The rotors were pretty thin, and the pads had maybe 2-3mm left! At least they were worn evenly.

Seems to stop a little better now. It displaced quite a bit of brake fluid... actually to the point that I though it was a coolant leak that magically appeared when I noticed a puddle on the ground! Next time I have to compress calipers that much, I'll be sure to remove some fluid beforehand to minimize the mess.

I agree, depending on one's driving habit and area in the country many tires will work for the same car. Not sure if this is the case now but years ago some OEM tires were made specifically for new cars with less tread so good for only 20~25K miles.

The Uniroyal tires were installed yesterday and the European drive feeling is gone. Now it feels like a big Buick on the road. Even the Steering feels different. Like it went from 75% power assist to 100%. No feel to the wheel at all during lower speeds in particular. Time will tell on stopping distance and wet weather driving has been effected. Specifications are the same tire wise, but drive completely different. June

Wait for the Michelin Primacy 4 to hit the market. The Primacy 3 225/50 R17W is the correct replacement and even the Primacy MXM4 kept the one with the road feel. I'm quite shocked the tires make that much difference. I thought the suspension was responsible. June

Now I'm not going to say you're wrong as perceived levels of grip is subjective but statistically, the Pilot Sport 4s are significantly better tyres with shorter stopping distances in both wet and dry, combined with higher max cornering speed. Arguably, they are the best road tyre currently on the market, despite having been around for 3 years now. The PS4s are 'max performance tyres' afterall, whereas the Primacy 3s are 'premium touring tyres'; the Primacy is more comfortable, quieter and wears a whole lot better, but the PS4s are inherently the better performance tyre.

Here is a raft of reviews comparing the PS4s with their competitors since its release in 2016. Now admittedly there is no direct comparison between the PS4s and Primacy 3s, as they are not in the same category and so will not be grouped together. However, if you look at the independent data from testers like ADAC or AutoBild or NZ Testing, you can find all the relevant statistics for both tyres from their website. Be mindful that the tyres are not always tested at the same size, which will impact performance.

On a side note, the Primacy 4s have been out for close to six months already here in the EU, I'm rather surprised they arent available in the US yet.

Tyres make a huge difference. I had cheap Chinese tyres from Sunny on my previous S80 when I bought it. I drove them in heavy rain once then replaced them. Terrible tyres in the wet. Ok in the dry but quite noisy.

"Chinese tyres from Sunny" - They were made for Sunny days not Rainy . No false advertising .
