s70 98 new timing belt sitting on the edge of the pulley and sprockets
Hi, my s70 98 had done hydraulic tensioner and new timing belt at the local shop few days ago. All pulleys were replaced. They used Gates timing belt T252 . I have noticed that the belt seats now right on the edges of the cam sprockets. Also the belt on the tensioner pulley sticks out slightly past the outer edge. Maybe a millimeter. The belt itself has some fuzzy debris on the outer and inner edge, not much but considering just few days of riding I thought it's weird. The teeth on the belt look fine, no debris. My old timing belt was spotless. Guys at the shop told me that Gates belts are like that. Is that true? As far as tensioner's pulley having the belt sticking out: Is it possible that they lost the washer, which comes with the pulley on its mounting surface? Is it one of these washers you can remove or it's a permanent one. I am talking about part INA 5310090100 / ZT00901. Car seems to be running fine. The alignment marks on cam sprockets and oil pump are fine too, I checked all of it. The plastic clip on the tensioner is missing. I am about to order one. What do you think guys? Thanks

In general, the installation looks fine to me, based on the photos.
The fraying on the edge of the belt in the last two photos wouldn't worry me.
I will let others speak up about this because I may be confusing this situation with some research I did of the larger 960 engine which was one of these modular engines despite being RWD. I believe the early engines went through an evolution of belts and sprockets in the early years where the timing belt changed in width and perhaps the sprockets changed, as well. For those years, you definitely had to order the sprockets and belts that were designed to work together - no mixing and matching!
I would get the part numbers of the pieces installed in your car by this shop and independently verify that they are the correct matching parts, if you are concerned.
But it looks fine to me.

I checked the parts. They are ok as far as Gates web site. They have also installed a Gates water pump from NAPA: 41110 which has different teeth layout from the original pump. it's also listed as correct part # on their web site. I wonder if anyone used Gates water pump?

People on this site have had problems with the Gates timing belt, not everyone but a few, so you are wise to check it out.
Are you saying the pulley is INA? What about the tensioner is it Aisin? Get the plastic clip yes.
The edge fray on the TB doesn't bother me. As for being off the edge of the sprocket etc, you want to leave the cover off and watch the timing belt as the engine idles. Does the belt wander back and forth, or stay put? If it wanders then either the pulley or the belt is amiss. Yes the washer is captive, that's not the issue

When the car is running the Timing belt wanders just tiny bit. You can see it only on the tensioner. It's a really small movement side to side. No movement on the sprockets. I will try to record it this week.erikv11 wrote: ↑20 Aug 2019, 20:56 People on this site have had problems with the Gates timing belt, not everyone but a few, so you are wise to check it out.

OK so offhand that does't sound bad enough to be a problem but it will be interesting to hear member comments on the vid, I'd post it up and see what people think.

Ok, Here is the link to the video on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ds9b5X2Ik1Y
Local Atlanta shop installed new timing belt (Gates) with water pump (Gates) and new tensioner, pulleys from ASIN (TKV-004) kit. The belt walks - it's a small axial movement about 1mm. You can see the belt hanging out over the edge of the tensioner pulley - about 1 mm. Car runs fine, no issues. Old Volvo belt was centered, it looks actually better than the new one from Gates. It was 10 years old and about 60 000 miles. I wonder if this lateral movement is acceptable? Is there some tolerance for the lateral movement? Anyone looked at their belt while the car is idling? Thanks for your comments!
For impatient people:
Pictures of timing belt 0:00 to 1:30 minute
From 1:30 minute: Video showing the tension of the timing belt and later on: video of the belt while the car is running. Please slow down the video; you might be able to see the axial movement better.

I distinctly remember the belt riding in the middle on my 98 S70 T5. Looking back at my old post I see that the pulley is wider than the water pump unless it is due to the camera angle. The belt will not be stretched evenly and will not last besides potentially being pulled further outward. Heat traveling to the outer / cooler edge of the belt will cause it to have the shape of a cone. If it wanders it may cause it veer / wander more and more sporadically if the tension is not correct or too loose.
