Anyhow, removed a bevel gear & driveshaft (again) for fun, just to make sure I "still had it". Fortunately that exercise wasn't for naught. Turned out the DEM pump had ceased operating so put a new one in for resumed AWD function.

Whoa. My iPD gauge had proper markings. The problem with those is that you couldn't see themBoost gauge install
I didn't notice any notchy action.
Like you, I struggled with placement. Headliner, A-pillar, instrument cluster... I tried them all.
I believe yours is a previous generation.
Yep, my IPD one is notchy (not horribly), and there aren't any kinks in my nylon line. Looks like they used to use vinyl tubing, wonder if that accounts for the difference in action? The $14 ebay one is smooth as silk & every bit as accurate as the IPD one & has a smoked lens that appears black with the ignition off. Not ripping on IPD, I love lots of their stuff & have spent oodles with them (haven't we all?), simply saying their gauge isn't worth $60 or $70 or whatever it costs.
I still need to wire them so they are dimmable.
Anyone want to wager a bet as to how much longer this collar sleeve/BG input is going to last? 276,500 on it as is. $5 beer money to the winner.
