Volvo Repair Database Front driver side strut mount creaking

Post by skaupert »

For the last month or so, there have been moderate creaking sounds coming from the left front. They remind me of sounds I heard before the spring seat/strut mount in the 2005 XC70 failed spectacularly. :)

The struts were replaced by the previous owner maybe 10k miles ago. From the top I can see the (French) warning stickers - about not removing the nut :). The sticker on the right hand side is undisturbed, the sticker on the left shows about a quarter inch of movement of the top of the strut rod in either direction from the center point. Not enough to suggest failure, but also not nothing.

Anyone here who has experience with strut mount failures on a P3? (note that I have two P2 Volvo's, with IPD spring seats in the 2001, and the 2005 about to get them, so my question is really specific to the P3, which I've only owned since January of this year).

Thank you,

Sebastian

Grab the fender well and lift up, keeping your eyes on the strut mount.

Ball joints can creak too - mine is awaiting me replacing a ball joint and it sounds like the sound effect from a sail boat from the movies. https://mynoise.net/NoiseMachines/squea ... erator.php You can jack that side up and see if the wheel wiggles when moved from the sides; also visual inspection of the ball joint.

2008 and up V70/XC70 are beginning to experience a higher rate of bushing failure in the rear (especially driver side), the sound is louder than the spring seat noise, a pronounced creaking. Are you sure it is the front?

Just to confirm, my 2004 v70 eats ball joints every 30-40k and my driver's side was creaking like an old Tall Ship when I turned the wheels at low speed. I changed the ball joint and control arms and the creak went away. Items like ball joints should be addressed sooner rather than later as they effect wear on tires, control arms and tie rods. To whit, my right tie rods need replacing now as well (struts are a-ok).
