1996 960 problem please help

ok it only happens everynow and then, what happens is i get in my car start it and then try and shift and it will not let me shift out of park. then i try my windows and they do not work either... i then turn off the car and restart it and it then works. if anyone knows the cause of this problem please let me know.

Failing shiftlock override microswitch inside the shifter console is common on 960. Very cheap part but dealer will charge $$ to replace, If you have the time you can do it yourself.

I'm not shure how the window failing could coincidental though

I had a 740 that did this and the problem was the Ignition switch (key) was not returning all the way. try turning the key slightly toward the off position.

I had similar problem. The microswitch should have been replaced under manufactor's recall warranty. There was a recall in 1997 for this switch. I had to have this switch replaced twice within two years. Also, you could have a faulty emission sensor, which will do the same thing. I also had this replaced under manufacture recall---it failed too. Car now has 160,000 miles. You should check with the highway commission for all of the recalls for the 1996 960 volvo---there were around 3or 4 recalls. Also, find a good independent volvo repair shop.
