release cv joint

Post by vovo850 »

Any tips on how to get the cv joint off?
I'm using snap ring pliers to open up the snap ring and trying to tap it off.
Every smack of the hammer results in the pliers coming off the snap ring.
I don't have a vise so I'm sure that might be helpful but I think the bouncing would still make the pliers bounce off.
I have to be missing something because I know you guys have done it.
I have spent more time playing with the pliers than I did actually removing the drivers axle.
Tried to youtube it but I didn't see any video where they actually went thru the whole motion.

Do you have the shaft clamped in a vise?

no I don't have one, as I posted above, I still feel that would not stop the pliers from bouncing and losing contact with the snap ring when I hit the joint. I'm using snap ring pliers and have tried using 3 different sizes.
I can get it to open up but they don't hold it enough when I smack it.
I don't think I have needle nose pliers narrow enough to push the ring apart. Mine looks a lot more narrow than the one
I saw Robert do on youtube.

My favorite way these days it to hold open the ring with a fat screwdriver, then use an air hammer on the joint surface between the ends of the ring. Takes a few tries but once the ring is held apart properly they pop right off. I put the axle in a vise, that part seems essential. Alas, I did three of them over the last year.

I'm sure someone will contradict this, but I'm not sure how you do this without a bench vice. The few times I have done this you needed 3 hands idealy to carry this out and without a vice it would be near impossible. You really need the axle held firmly so the shock of hitting the cage assembly is fully transferred.

I wish you luck.

Yes absolutely, right at least 3 hands.
I'll see about getting a vise than, it would be nice to have one anyway.
I may contact a garage and get a price just to get it done if it's not too pricey.
I'll try the screwdriver method as well. I'm guessing it doesn't need spread too much.
Thanks everyone for their experience on this.

I bought the CV Joint Removal tool a few months ago.
I wished I bought this tool 15 years ago.

I just replaced the CV Boots on my 2004 V70, this tool makes the job of separating the CV Joint so easy.
This is one tool that is worth every penny.

Make sure you use GKN boots (or Volvo boots). They are much better than the aftermarket junks.

The tool is $16 on ebay:

A couple questions Cam:

(1) Do you still have to release the circlip, or just force it off?
(2) Did you use hand tools or air or similar on the axle nut? I've seen both in videos, wondered about your experience.
(2) Did you leave the axle(s) engaged in the car or pull them off?

Thanks for posting, this tool could be a time saver.

Very nice, I think I'm going to buy it!
I am taking the one I have off right now to a mechanic down the road, he said he'd take it off for 10$ so thats a good deal for me.
I don't have time to go get a vise right now.
I still have passenger side to do so this would be handy and would recover the cost instantly pretty much.
I am curious like erikv11 asked' about the circlip.
And being able to leave the axle in the car would be huge!
