2006 V70 134A Freon Charge Amount

Post by STSCowboy »

2006 V70 134A AC Charge.

I read in the Volvo Owners Manual the charge is supposed to be 2.2 pounds, I read Motor Specification Guide it’s supposed to be 2.2 pounds. Yet the Placard on the car says 1.54 pounds!

Which is it?

When I bought the car it was undercharged at .44 pounds. The shop serviced it at 2.2 pounds and it worked great for 4 days then it dumped all of the Freon. It’s hooked up at another shop and seems to be holding a vacuum so they are going to charge it to 1.54 pounds and see how the unit performs.

Here is an update.

The system held vacuum fine so the AC Shop filled the system with 1.54 pounds of 134A and the system functioned perfectly except a small leak was detected in the condenser. So they evacuated the system and now a search for the best condenser begins as a replacement that is also economically feasible.

AC Update

Found the Condenser to hold a vacuum but leak under pressure. I ordered a new Nissen Condenser from FCPEuro and had it installed. All of the source material told the shop to put 2.2pounds of 134A in as a charge. They did and the system operated fine with a 40* Delta between ambient air and Vent Air but I found a decal by the radiator to charge with only 1.53 pounds. So I took the V70 back this morning and they dumped, vacuumed and refilled the system with 1.53 pounds. Today the ambient temps were 95* in So Cal and the Vent Air was 40* so I had a 55* delta in temps which is insanely great!

The Nissens is probably good at $75.
According to FCPEuro, it is made in China.

Valeo is OEM, but it is $200.
Next time do the whole thing yourself and save $.
Autozone etc. rents the vacuum pump for free.

I have the equipment to do it myself, I have the knowledge and skills to do it myself. I’ve been an ASE Mechanic and an Aircraft Mechanic for 30+ years. Sometimes you just don’t feel like doing it and it’s easier to work double-time at work and sit on your butt than digging into doing the job yourself.
