Random cylinder misfires (P0300) on the old girl and running rough. Replaced all the plugs with no effect so I moved on to getting a new Bosche cap and rotor and the Bougicord plug wires. Soon as I pulled the distributor I could see that the intake cam seal was leaking too. As luck would have it, when I had previously replaced the leaking exhaust cam seal I had purchased extras (they're really cheap) so I was able to slap a new one in - bonus repair. New ignition parts fixed the misfires completely, she's back to running smooth as silk with tons of power at 160k miles. Total cost: $115 plus about 30 minutes of easy work. A good day.
Cap and Rotor: Bosch 04272 / 03371
Ignition Wire Set: Bougicord 9135700
Cam Seal: SKF 11809

Went back to finish my transmission fluid replacement yesterday, but I couldn't get the drain plug out
So I gave up and got 1.9L of fluid out with a 50ml (0.05L) syringe, took me a while

Gear changes feel smoother now, next thing on the list is new shifter bushings

Oil change today at just over 64,500 miles and finally figured out the keyless entry. Posted a write up for anybody else trying to figure theirs out.

Replaced the heater core in the wife's '97 GLT today.

Used the ebay one that I've had on the shelf for a while, after we started to get slight whiffs of coolant from the vents occasionally.
Easy job. About and 1-1/2 hours, with the 2-year-old "helping".

I wanna say blue, but don't quote me on that.WhatAmIDoing wrote: ↑26 Oct 2019, 16:39 After disappearing from the internet for a couple months... A lot has happened with my T5. Turns out my rear brake problems was simply down to excessive runout on the old rotors. Installed new rotors, Akebono pads, and paid a shop $70 to install new rear hoses (every connection was over tightened and stripped out). Gave her an oil change, full exterior detail, and rotated my tires. Front struts are blown now, so need to harvest those new ones off my parts car. Hoping the springs are the same, but have a feeling they are not. What's the color code for a 98 S70 T5 front springs (please say blue/green)? And lastly, my passenger door check has failed at the ripe old age of 22.5 years / 274k miles. Something else to harvest off the parts car.

Was having a fair amount of CV axle noise when accelerating from a stop, not every time, but most, but only for a second or three. PO had indicated they were replaced and look like it, so I ruled those out, at least temporarily. The upper torque mounts looked fine, and expected those to be relatively new, as well (head gasket repair, and most of the top end bits were replaced). Settled on replacing torque rod and passenger side engine mount before moving on to the hydraulic mounts. Had a few moments between a grocery run and some other weekend tasks, so I put the car up on ramps and got to swapping out the torque rod.
Wow, not only was the rearmost bushing shot, but the play in it had worked the nut off the bolt. No wonder the noise had become so commonplace. Replacement from FCP was the cheap Hutchinson with the usual grinding marks from the Volvo roll mark removal.
Made a big difference, was obviously the problem. Smoother shifting, and quieter ride (ignoring the 22 year old rattles from the dash and spring seats that need swapping out).
Another lesson in checking the cheaper/easier to check parts first.

If I understand your post correctly, your 1996 850 has less than 65,000 miles on it?? is that true?

Pulled the head from my '07 C70 T5 to find all 10 exhaust valves were bent. Discovered 3 intake valves with a pretty sizeable gap but not enough to contact the piston when closed. Serpentine belt frayed, somehow sucked into the timing cover, engine jumped time and bent all the exhaust valves. Ordered all new valves (may as well replace intake while in there!) and cleaned all the crud off the 12-year-old engine.
What probably helped me the most is investing in VIDA. The paint-by-numbers easy instructions for disassembling the engine was invaluable as it showed the locations of each bolt and nut I had to remove. If you don't have it, I HIGHLY recommend getting it. I've done core engine work before, but knowing where each of the fasteners were probably saved me a ton of time and spared me from a few migraines.
