That looks like the wrong size clamp. I put them on like in your bottom pic, and just have to struggle a little to get them hooked before finishing with the pliers clamp.

What part number boot kit did you get?
This is for a non-turbo 850 correct?
Was it easy to get the boot on?

Sometimes you will find a turbo axle has been put in a non-turbo car. Turbo axle is larger diameter and takes a different boot.

Correct non-turbo 850 glt.
Boot was fairly easy to get on, little tight on the smaller end but I expected that.
Not too difficult to get the larger side on, mostly just dealing with slippery rubber.
I didn't have to pry with anything to get it to suck up onto it.
Here is the link to what I bought. https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... o-31256235
part# 300427 #97 stamped on the clamp if that helps any

PN is correct from GKN. Clamp is the wrong size.
See if FCP can send you another kit (GKN does not sell the Oetiker clamp separately).
The CV Boot kit is only $9.50.

I bought 2 of the kits, they both have the same size clamp.
Now I didn't stick the other one on, I just eyeballed it. It looked the same. (same stamping)
I thought maybe I bought the wrong kit, since I bought them separately.
Checked the other box, same part#, same clamp.
I think I am going to contact them and see whats going on though.
I need new clamps one way or another.

Actually I am pretty sure you have the right size clamp, 97 Oetiker is correct for the non-turbo outer CV. And since the boot went on OK, it sounds like it is still a non-turbo CV joint, the smaller one.

Wipe everything clean of grease and you should be able to put it on using the technique in the bottom pic. Make sure the clamp is over the groove in the CV when you go to hook it, sometimes you have to use a needle nose pliers or something to get it hooked. And/or squeeze the clamp all the way around. You probably need to get that grease out of there to get some purchase.

Small screwdriver through square hole in clamp and tip against hook to lever into place.

So I've been really busy with work and finally tried to do this today..
There is no way that clamp with work, it needs stretched another inch give or take. It won't even fit over the metal part of the joint with it hooked together. Let alone fit over the boot. So I definitely need a larger clamp.
What size clamp does the Turbos use? I went to the parts store locally and tried to see if a Dorman clamp that is about 3" wide would work and it's a tad small still.
Quick look on fcp doesn't appear they sell clamps individually? Maybe I didn't search properly.
Has anyone used the smooth band worm gear style clamps? I was thinking that would be easier to source and make work.
Not sure about balance issues if that is a concern even.

fcp is going to ship me a new boot kit for the turbo for free to see if the clamp will fit.
A1 service and they really didn't have to.

Just replaced a cv boot today on the 98 S70 GLT. Used the Volvo kit which had Ford grease in the box go figure. Used two screw drivers to force the clamp together then used a similar oetiker tool to pinch. Don't forget to burp any air out of boot before you pinch by sliding a screwdriver under the edge of boot.

new boot arrived today, and the turbo clamp fits perfectly, I haven't cinched it down yet but it's obvious it is the correct one.
I'm kind of curious about this axle.
Can you put a turbo CV joint on a N/A axle will it fit?
I'm wondering if that was why I had so much issues with getting it off and back on.
I probably will send back my other boot kit and exchange it for the Turbo one for my passenger side.
My luck will be it will be the correct axle and than I have an axle out while I exchange parts again..
