Voltage regulator replacement?

Post by olddaddy »

Our 2000 V40 had a dead battery recently and the codes indicated, T2251 voltage reg failed, diodes passed......So, I am assuming I need to replace the voltage regulator and not the entire alternator. Am I right? I think I can do the regulator, but the alternator would be a trip to the mechanic. Let me know.

I think the voltage regulator is internal to the alternator and not a generally replaceable part. But I may be wrong on that and please correct me if so.

Changing the alternator is not the worst job to do on a S(V) 40, but you will need a decent assortment of tools and a bit of patience.
I've done it a few times on my '01.

I see. Will have to take a look to see how accessible it is.

Things are pretty tight under the S40 hood and I just don't remember how easy it is to get to the back side of the alternator.
Off the top of my head, I think it's under the PS pump.

I watched some videos and decided to have a go at it, just the regulator, not the alternator. I’ll report back on the outcome.
