Best is to find a similar car (2.4, 2.5T) with lower mileage and listen to it.
A bit of tapping noise is normal for the Volvo 5-cyl engine.
Or listen to some youtube videos to find out what "normal engine noise" is.

Both my 2004 V70 2.5T and 2005 XC90 2.5T have similar tapping noise.

PS: Best is to use synthetic oil, change it at short interval such as 2500-3000 miles for a few cycles, based on the assumption that the P.O. did long oil intervals and that there is some sludge in the engine.

Okay, ill give her an oil change. I heard they are picky about what oil filter is used. Whats the best one to get? Im pretty mechanically inclined (have owned 3 saabs) and i did all the maintenance myself. Just new to volvo as this is my first one

Tick is normal for a Volvo. Especially when the Oil is a quart low. Just the valves up top tapping every now and then.

Fix your intake leaks, and clean the throttle body. Common a dirty throttle body shows a code on these cars. Your codes are showing something along those lines, as the throttle body measures air across the plate as well. The ECM uses this, and the MAF along with the boost pressure sensor to monitor the air coming in.

- Oil: synthetic oil you can find in Canada.

- Oil Filter: I use Mahle.

- Tool: you need this otherwise you will strip the oil filter cap.
Best is to get new filter cap every 100K.

Sounds fine to me.

Given your location I’m guessing it’s cold enough. On a cold engine a knock is pretty easy to hear. Sometimes warm, under no load & idling it can be very faint.

I have a clip of a knocking 06 idling if you want to hear it. The engine had only been knocking for approx 10 minutes, according to the owner who supposedly caught it early & stopped driving it.

I didn’t have my stethoscope with me, but oddly enough it sounded like cylinder #3. Typically you’d expect #5 if sludged or a low/no oil psi condition had occurred. Probably just the sound reverberating in the intake manifold “ball”.

Edit: As you can see, the knock sensors had picked up this knock & generated a code. I think the microphone picked it up pretty well also. I have another clip I can post if you’d like.

You can tell it’s still idling higher than a warm engine. I think idle steps down two times after cold startup. This is the first step down from the initial high/cold idle.

Sorry, don’t mean to domineer. I think this may be of importance. This is the same engine, just later in the warmup cycle. Notice how much the knocks pervasiveness has subsided once the engines idle speed has settled down.

I hadn’t realized how almost imperceptible the knock was on camera until I rewatched this video I took a couple months ago. In person I feel it is much easier to detect after the engines idle speed has stabilized.

No the video i posted was of my engine cold, it was only running for about 2 or 3 mins. Im unable to open your videos. Does mine sound like a knock
