getting ready to R&R the driver's side CV shaft

Post by azureblue »

Looks to be an easy job, except for pulling the shaft out of the transmission. Most vids talk about how that can be difficult due to a stuck snap ring. It's hard to see in the vids but is there enough room and access to get some snap ring piers up in there to release the ring?

No - the snap ring is internal. You need to pull it sharply or rap it sharply and it will compress and pull out. A slow pull will not work (maybe with a special tool) - you also need to exert force on the outside of the inner portion - not pulling on the shaft as the joint will absorb the energy. Last time I did mine I think I used a larger flat (flat head screw driver or crow bar), found a place to place it and gave it a good wack with a hammer. Just place it some where it will not chip anything.

The Volvo spare tire wrench has a flat end which fits nicely to pry on it. May have to remove the splashield if you still have it
Also can get stuck inside the wheel hub (hopefully not). I once tried to remove one at the junkyard - it was so stuck inside the tranmission, I broke the tip of the spare wrench, a cold chisel, then brought a 2ft pry bar - no luck. When installing a new one, if the clip is too large and it doesn't slide in easily inside the transmission, don't force : it may never come out again. Also may use some grease both on the transmission and spindle side.

thanks. I have an aftermarket spare tire tool. The original was a stamped lug nut socket that screwed onto the tow eye. I have a few pry bars - one looks like a huge long screwdriver with an angled tip and i have one of those pry tools use to pull nails out of wood. and a huge crow bar. one of those has got to get it out . I have been working on my French profanity bout maybe I should pick up on some Swedish before I get to prying on this thing..

I may go to the parts yard and practice before I go to work on mine.

so if the clip is too large, is it ok to swap it with the old one?

Great idea to practice on junk first.

When I removed the transmission on our V70 AWD I used a pair of claw hammers. I’d spin the half shaft 1/8 turn, pry, 1/8 turn, pry, 1/8 turn pry etc. I spose a good method would be with two people, one person with the claw hammers & the other with a hammer & brass drift.

I never like prying against a trans housing but there’s not enough room for the tool I usually use with a slide hammer, so just gotta grit your teeth & go for it.

Check your trousers, trans housing, & if all is well enjoy the rest of the task.

I learned the trick from jimmy57, basically the C-Clip in the axle has an opened end.
You want the opened end to face down so it does not "hang" and gets stuck.
So rotate the axle, pull a bit, rotate again, no need to force it.

I posted all the tricks in the DIY in this forum...

I thought the C clip was a snap ring, hence the question about getting snap ring pliers in the to compress the C / snap ring.
Yeah, I'm concerned about prying against the transmission housing. That sounds scary. I was hoping to put something against the transmission housing the spread the pressure. Or maybe pry from opposite sides at the same time.
I'll go looking in the DIY forum - thanks

Don’t over- worry this. I’ve never spent more than 73 seconds popping an axle

If you get stuck, come back here

That's something I'm good at - over worrying a car repair job. :-)

NOTE: I used a small piece of cardboard folded in half as cushion, then cold chisel in between the cardboard.
The gently chisel between the INNER CV joint and the Trans Housing: the axle came out w/o issues.

Here is the DIY.
