Clutch replacement

We just had a 1998 volvo s70 t5 given to us and we were told the clutch is shot. Does anyone have any advice or know any sites with a step by step tutorial including pictures of replacing a clutch? I currently have a Chilton manual and have done a few major engine jobs and need to do my homework a little more and is there anything I should keep in mind that could be a concern? Or has anyone else replaced one on their own?

I had a clutch done by my local mechanic recently and I can say that it is a bit tricky getting the right parts. On the third order, it was finally correct. Apparently, there are several different clutches for '98s not all of which are interchangeable. Mine was a V70, but I am assuming the S70 may be susceptible to the same frustrating issue. Even with the correct VIN number, there is no guarantee you will get the right parts. What ultimately worked for my mechanic was a description over the phone to the parts supplier of the part that was coming out. My original clutch lasted 229K miles.

98's can be a problematic year to find parts for in several different areas.

Depending on whether it's an early-production 98 or a late-model 98, there is either a single or dual-mass flywheel. Obviously the parts are different, and while a dual-mass is much smoother to drive, it also complicates the clutch-change procedure a bit.

Thank you for your help. the vin number is yv1ls5343w2412617 meaning it is 2.3L L5 dohc 20v turbo, with engine b5234t3. manual transmission of course, with front wheel drive, with 236 horse power. Any advice on going about this undertaking and which flywheel it is?

Apparently the clutches go by the chassis code instead of the VIN number. Sorry bout that.

The chassis code is located on your VIN tag under the hood (the lower row of numbers).

Dual-mass flywheel clutch setup would apply to the following breaks:

Volvo C70 Coupe 1998-2002
Volvo C70 Convertible 1998-2004
*Volvo S70 Turbo 1998-2000 (after chassis 460000) *
Volvo S70 Non Turbo 1999 (before chassis 579062)
Volvo V70 Turbo 1998-2004(after chassis 395002)
Volvo S60 Turbo 2001-2004

I just bought a 98 S70 T5M and the rear main is leaking. The clutch is slipping as well when I push it hard so i figured I might as well do the whole thing. I've been reading through the forums and even contacted my local dealership to price out parts and ensure I get the right ones. My question is what else should I be doing while I have everything apart. I read somewhere about changing O-Rings on the oil up pipe? Does anyone have a diagram that shows all the proper gaskets I'm going to require?

I have two friends that are former mechanics and a Haynes manual, we have a full shop with lift !!

Thanks in advance for any advice!

You are going to be spending about 1000 in parts, and another 300-1000 in self/paid labor

Add 30 to your budget and buy an Alldata subscription for your car which will give you step by step for the clutch.

I did my P2 clutch with that resource.
