Supplement to Delta Link Replacement
Re: DIY: 1997 Volvo 850 - a supplement to Rear End Delta Link...
I just completed this job on the passenger side of my '98 S70. I did end up purchasing an aftermarket removal/installation tool from Freedom Racing that is supposed to be stronger tool than the Volvo OEM tool. Prior to purchasing the tool, I had broken off 2 drill bits and had done what I felt was pretty substantial blow-torching to the point of flaming rubber goo dripping. Delta link did not budge. Even with tool, it was extreme pressure to get link out and I was blow-torching during entire process per the limited instructions that came with tool. The YouTube by Mercedes diesel guy is helpful. Everything about job is tough including positioning tool correctly on frame as I was working during Chicago winter freezing temps in unheated garage. When uninstalling I recommend using a section of 2x4 to leverage the suspension lower for part to clear the bolt on post where delta link gets bolted to car. on install, I had part in freezer and used dish soap to lubricate part. My tool did droop toward end and of install. The C-clamp method mentioned above would have helped. Midway thru install, make sure post from car is in delta link bolt thru hole before pressing further in. Due to tool drooping, I banged last 1/3 inch in by tapping side to side with 2x4 & hammer striking the plastic rubber sleeve of part directly. In order to align part and bolt hole I used 90 degree angle long neeedle nose pliers to nudge tight part in place. In order to seat the link properly to car, I needed to jack the suspension arm (the part that delta link attaches to) to the point of lifting entire car, then loud thunk as it seated properly and could bolt up part. My car no longer has loud thunking noise when hitting a pothole or braking hard. Still has normal creaks that i figure are other body bushings that need attention in spring. Hope this helps. I'll do other side in Spring.
