One way to keep your coils alive longer - change your spark plugs frequently. Once a misfire is detected the computer drives that ignition coil even harder. Be it the fault of an old spark plug or otherwise, this is one of the things that’s killing coils. Heat is an enemy too.

I’m doing the V70R at 20k intervals since it’s basically free after the first set is paid for (many thanks to FCP). The others I change at 40-50k.

I personally would not change out ignition coils just to change them out. One thing you could do is buy & install an entire new set & keep your old known good ones as spares. We’re it me, and it has been many times, I’d just wait for one cylinder to drop due to a dead coil, then replace just the dead coil. Or, if you have a set of 5 new in the cupboard, wait til then to swap them out. But keep your old ones!

Did you get new Cu crush washers for your banjo bolt?

Edit: on your J-hose, it almost looks like the "clasp" part of the worm drive cut the hose. Also looks like the clamp is "forward" (towards the front of the car) more than it should be on the hose, but I think there's only one area that that clamp can even go. I see that FCP has changed the contents of their PCV kit, did you get it from them? Their kit used to contain a Gen Volvo j-hose that melted retinas at $75. Now I see it has been replaced for a $25 PPS part.

The sensor above the starter motor - I've seen Jimmy57 post about it a couple times. Might search his posts for the answer. I looked for 20 minutes using google images but didn't see anything relevant.

I’ve never found documentation that motronic drives coils at different currents in response to load, but that’s deep knowledge. I’ve read the same on BMW ignition but then no one knows where they “ know it” from...ergo a rumor.

I’ve had two failures. One at 120k after a school bus jump pack, about a week after the jump.

The other at old age of about 100k. Gave warning of cold start missing cylinder one week before collapse.

I've never heard that either about coil packs. But I'll have a new set in a couple of days. It's running fine - I could just keep them with me on the trip and change them later. Not make too many last minute changes.

There's not much to that hose, smaller then I thought. I'm going to take a chance on XC70Rider's experience, move some hoses out of the way, and see if I can reach it from the drivers side without taking off the intake. It's a Volvo hose, as is the one that split.

Bart, I would definitely verify that that is the correct hose. There are two hoses made, but very differently sized on the one end. Of the PCV’s I’ve done, both 2004’s required the larger hose. The one in your pic looks like the smaller one that wouldn’t fit.

This is the one I’ve used on the 2 04’s. You can check with your VIN. Granted, I used Gen Volvo for one, and URÖ on the other.

This is the smaller one.

Edit: the gist of it is when there’s a carboned up, bad, faulty, old plug that can’t allow the energy from the coil to pass through it, that energy is “stuck” in the coil & more just keeps pouring in. As that voltage rapidly builds & can’t escape it essentially fries it from within.

1200 miles is two weeks business driving for me during semesters. I don't check anything other than oil every other week.

I think this thread was a hijack by Mrs BB to fill out his list of to dos.

But your cars are probably kept up to a higher level as a starting point, and you've driven them a while and trust them. That's where I'm trying to get to. (And get over some Audi PTSD)

(and Mrs BB would appreciate having a car we can jump into and go anywhere like we used to)

That PCV hose is a Volvo brand Flame Trap Vent Hose #1271653 for an '04 XC70. Ipd # 112257.

Look at this - I think maybe the clamp hooked the rubber and tore it. Maybe I make things too tight? I dunno. I disconnected some vacuum hoses and the intake pipe so I could get my arms under there. Tiny flashlight. 1/4" drive flex nut driver got one clamp off, LONG screwdriver to slip it off, and a 1/4" ratchet and short socket to get the PCV box clamp loose.

Now to get it back on there! I got some skinnier clamps from our Fastenal store.

Man that’s an ugly cut. Whew, I was worried you were gonna need the bigger j-hose.

Yeah, too tight. The rubber failed under the screw clamp and then the crack propagates away.

The clamp just needs to firm up on the rubber, and the better quality closed type won’t bite the rubber like that
