1986 245 automatic

Post by vcolper »

I just purchased this 1986 245 with a sluggish tranny. I will flush tranny and clean filter.
What transmission fluid should I use for this tranny? type F/G or dexron?

Thanks,

Vic

Owner's manual says Dexron 11D.

Thanks again. Hit the road today...not for long til it started slipping again...damn. Another thing I noticed. It will not shift into fourth gear. OD light is not on... Also after cleaning up my garage floor from the oil mess I found a small sreel ball....got me very worried. I only took of the oil pan, filter and the piece that comes out with the filter...it's like a chamber for the oil after the filter. I have no idea where the little ball came from...any ideas?
By the way, I'll be swapping the tranny out next weekend and relace it with one off a 1987 740 (non turbo also)...I believe it's the same.
Inputs/comment welcome.

Not sure about the steel ball but there are quite a few in the box.

Be careful about the replacement box. The '87 740 non-turbo should have had a ZF-4HP22L box fitted. The '86 240 used the AW70. I don't know if they are interchangeable. They may well be but....

The '87 740 turbo used the AW71 box.

This info comes from http://www.nuceng.ca/bill/. On Bill Garland's Personal Home Page click on 'Volvo Cars' for interesting facts about engines and transmissions.
