Using 2 new studded tires in the front and ordinary tires on the rear axle is really dangerous.
The tires with the best traction should ALWAYS be at the rear, whether the car is fwd or rwd doesn't matter.

The ability to get traction on a ice road at low speeds is probably better having the studded tires in the front on a fwd car but the risk that the rear loses traction driving 55 mph on a highway is much more deadly.

I think the real point here is that high quality studs
all around are far superior to only two studded tires.

Indeed! With Nokian Hakkapelitta 9 I (over)compensate for the fact that my 850 lack any modern active safety device such as a anti skid system.

Proper winter tyres without studs (not the all season crap) are almost as good without the noise. Except on actual ice of course.

But having two winter tyres up front is probably even more dangerous than having none. With none you won't get anywhere to begin with. With two you'll get up to speed then have a crash.

I was impressed when I first read about the new SIPS design when the 850 came out. This is way pre-SIPS, but a neighbor of ours in her 240 wagon was hit right on the B-post like this by a drunk driver in a K-car at about 50mph - he went right through a stop sign. As the B-post started to fold, the roof sardine-canned similar to yours. Her seat was pushed a foot towards the center of the car as the sill rail collapsed. She ended up with just a bruised shoulder.
