Windshield wiper removal 98 S70

Post by bigfinn »

Okay, my goal is to replace the upper firewall engine mount. To do so, I must first remove the windshield wiper arms, then the panel at the bottom of windshield before I can get to the mount.
I can't get the wiper arm to just come off after removing the 13 mm bolt with rachet. What is the trick....I don't want to break the wiper arm with too much force. There is a plastic washer under the bolt that does not pop out like I think it should....Help..

Bigfinn,

Take a look here and see the pics, this is from the 850 manual download under wiper washer system.pdf
Better still go and download the manual. The sytems should be very similar.

The above wiper adjustment is good for reference .

I have never resorted to using the pliers as in the picture.
I have always lifted the arm off the windscreen by bending it at the hinge.....not actually bending it....you know what I mean !!!
I then gently persuade it upwards, you have to have the hood up for this .
The plastic "cap " try removing by twisting in your hand, grab it with your thumb pointing skyward so the cap fits in the bottom of your palm or where your "pinky" should be. Get a good grip and a good few turns with upwards pressure should free it.

downloaded the manual . Looks like the bolt stays on, just loosened, and then it should just pop out? Not logical to me if the bolt is not taken all the way off.
Any other advise would be appreciated....Will give it another try tomorrow...

That's the way to do it... you will take the bolt off after you have followed the directions to pop the arm off. Loosen the bolt so it's just on the top of the shaft. The arm is "squeezed down" on that shaft very tightly and so you have to use the pliers to pry it up. Leaving the nut in place just saves the threads, otherwise you'd be using the pliers directly on the shaft itself which you could damage. You'll feel it pop up.

I've already stripped the splines. Other than buying a new arm, can I repair this? And how to avoid stripping the spline in future?

Buy a new arm and place a tiny dap of Anti-seize/Never-seize on it.

They make a tiny 2-arm puller for this. Wiper arms can be a real problem to remove on older vehicles.
