When I was working in BZN (my 5 year stint in MT) one of my production managers would take a week off for hunting.
Everyone else took off a few weeks later.

I asked him about it. Oh, he said, the earlier week is for black bear hunting.....with a bow.

I have to admit, if you can take a bear with a bow, you deserve it.

Yike. No thanks. But black bears are "little" and not so aggressive.

My 29-yr old son, when he was 14, encountered a Grizzly sow and cub (worst case scenario) on a trail in Glacier Park. 15' away, she looked right at him. He remembers the color of her eyes, and smell. But we were lucky that she was annoyed with Junior not paying attention to the digging lesson she was giving. She turned and grabbed Junior (not ours thank gawd) by the scruff of the neck and dragged him back for more digging practice. Our son slowly backed away and eventually got the hell out of there. At the lodge, the Rangers interviewed him about her behavior and what he did wrong surprising her.
