steering wheel removal

Post by bimmerjac »

I have a 1996 850 wagon and I am replacing the evapoator core. I have worked on many older Volvo, BMW and VW cars over the years but this is my first time playing with an air bag.

I have one stupid question.........

How do I remove the stering wheel? I have the air bag conrtol module unpluged and the negative battery cable off. The lower and upper plastic housing is off as well as the column switches (turn sighnal and wiper). What am I not seeing? What is the trick?

Also.......

Do I have to remove the passeger air bag or will I be able to remove it with the upper dash frame?

Thanks :lol:

I found it.....

The T30 torx screws were covered by excess plastic from manufacturing and I could not see them. Going out to buy a longer shaft torx set.

Any tricks for the passenger air bag?

I can't help directly, but I can say 850 Haynes manual will cover this. Doesn't look like too many here have removed theirs.
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link
. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!

I discovered that the passenger airbag can be removed with the dashboard top after removing the bolts above the glove box and the screw that is hiding in the passenger speaker.

Next is to get into the housing that holds the evaporator core without moving or removing the heater core.

Maybe I should wait until Tuesday when the shop manual CD arrive :lol:
