Re: Coronavirus Thread

Post by abscate »

In my native The Netherlands, as of yesterday, half of those in intensive care are younger than 40 years old.
Half of coronavirus patients in the Netherlands who require intensive care are under the age of 50, according to a study of hospital admissions reported in NRC. Although nearly all the 24 patients who have died so far were over the age of 70, the disease can cause severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in much younger patients. Half of all patients who are admitted to intensive care for ARDS die. A study of 72,000 Covid-19 patients in China found that 81% suffered only mild symptoms, while six per cent needed intensive care or support with breathing. More than 80 per cent of the latter group were aged over 50. The high proportion of critically ill young people in the Netherlands may reflect the relatively younger population or the low overall number of Covid-19 patients who need intensive care, which is currently around 50, the study said. The findings were presented at a seminar of intensive care specialists and other doctors on Saturday.

Is there a lot of youngsters in The Netherlands that vape? We know that does a lot to the lungs and itself has done damage to the lungs of youngsters. I wonder if that could be a correlation?

In US, there are rural and metro areas, and in metro areas, there is much higher concentrations of people living in downtown locations, like in European metro areas.

I would suspect metro areas will be hit the hardest, but in rural areas, it will be mixed-some yes, others no. If virus's composition changes with time, its unknown what the impact will be. Further, each human's genome may be related...but, within next ten days, a clearer understanding might be known in US.

From a health perspective, imho, I would suggest daily exercise, plenty of sleep, and ingesting foods that can dilate blood vessels, like strawberries and onions. And if not available, maybe ingest upto 500mg of Vitamin C daily for males. If a person's immune system can not defend against virus, these measures will have no effect. Stress and sleep loss can increase blood pressure via vasoconstriction action on peripheral vascular system, so immune response may not be as effective.

No reason to stay home, just stay 2 meters from people (its a metric virus)
I've never had my gas gauge so high, I paid $2.28/gallon for 93 the other night. I'm sure it's even less now, I'll have to fill up the 940 now even though that's still over 1/2 a tank.
In other news, my average MPG in the R is up at 19.8 now. Record high! It's all that highway driving I've done, I've used the 940 for most local stuff. That thing DRINKS gas though, probably worse than the R! Probably doesn't help that there seems to be a vacuum leak or something, and some resistance in the front wheels for some reason.

Yeah, this is already going down into history. Hopefully it won't be for much more than it already is, and we can look back on it in 20 years and say "remember when everybody freaked out and bought all the toilet paper?" Can't ignore how bad the actual virus has already spread, but hopefully the worst of this isn't as bad as we're anticipating.

General observations:
Bloomberg BusinessWeek March 16, 2020 issue is special on coronavirus. Lots of interesting articles on the economy, social distancing, work from home, and the virus itself. It is available online here:https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features ... d-industry

Gasoline future prices (and all crude oil and energy products) are down sharply in the last month. I watch New York spot price for gasoline to get indication of gasoline price trends. Typically (over many years) the local regular gas price is about 50 cents more than the NY spot price. New York spot was 0.68 cents yesterday. Local regular gas is still $1.89 to $1.98. I expect local price to drop quite a lot if the spot price stays down.

It seems to me, driving in your vehicle qualifies as social distancing. You can get out and drive around as long as you do not stop, get out and get close to people.

Johnny Carson jokes about the recent toilet paper shortage. There was actually not a toilet paper shortage, but after Johnny delivered this joke people ran out to the stores to stock up! Airdate - 12/19/1973
