High Mileage Oil--98 V70

Post by sjlevine »

Hey all-
I've got a '98 V70 non-turbo with 230,000 miles. I've recently been using some high mileage oil to condition the rings and reduce the blow-by. The question is, who makes the best high mileage oil? I've been using Penzoil, but the conditioners wear out after a while...
Any ideas?

Thanks!

I've heard Castrol is good but I'm not sure which is best...they may be all about the same as long as they are SAE certified. I'll let others give their opinions. In the meantime, you might look over on this site:

There seems to be a lot of good research based info over there.

I've read a number of articles over the years (sorry, it was a while ago and I can't direct you to them), and what I've read is that Penzoil is the worst oil. It's viscosity begins to break down almost immediately. Again, this was a while ago, and maybe they've improved their chemistry now. Also, this was before high millage formulas were very common.

I've always used Castrol. The tests of Castrol non-synthetic rated it better than some of the synthetics. When Castrol introduced synthetics, I began using them too, and have been happy with their performance. Other highly recommended oils are Mobile 1, and there was recently a post on Royal Purple. I've used Mobile 1, but never Royal Purple, but based on what people say (rave) about it, I will probably try it.

Of course, the most important thing with any oil is to keep it topped off, and changed regularly. Hope that helps.

I am under the impression that these high mileage oils can degrade engine seals. Does anyone have any comments or experience with that?
My son ruined his (at the time) 145K Audi engine with a high mileage oil. After he used it leaks started. He was convinced to switch to this oil at JiffyLube.

I have read some negative press on the high mileage oils as well, and I believe I read it over at bobistheoilguy, but that was awhile ago. It works to some degree if your problem is seal shrinkage where it can soften the seals up a bit. Where it does the damage is when the seals have started to break apart or are damaged, and the swelling breaks off pieces, which then causes the seals to fail faster. It's a crap-shoot to know which problem you have. For some it works, for others it doesn't.
