abscate are you saying you posted the wrong thing, you actually used DIY Seafoam? Or indeed do you recommend DIY penetrating oil?

I used DIY penetrating oil - acetone/ATF

I have done this on 3-4 engines in the past - mostly air cooled VW stuck horizontally opposed motors.

My first car was a '68 Type III (Squareback for you non VW enthusiasts). Non runner (stick) bought from my folks for $1 with no functioning reverse. Sweet ride.

My first car was a '67 Karmann ghia. Both doors would fly open when backing up. Had a blast with it.

I may have to give it a try since I have the car parked for another couple weeks and I am almost due for an oil change.

Great looking car. Wish I ever owned a car that used .5L oil every 4k km's, including brand new ones. You might make it easy and start with Marvel Mystery Oil, (? mineral spirits and ATF no fuss) directly in cylinder 2, let sit for 1-2 days, pull the fuel pump relay, crank a bit, add .5L to the fuel, run it well on a warm/hot day. This can avoid an oil change though you say it's needed anyway. Do not intend to start a Marvel debate. Just a thought. Other option, god forbid, would be to do nothing, drive it on a few long trips, stop thinking about it, check compression again in a year. I would likely take the obsess over it option myself, change the oil a zillion times, serial compression tests, whatever. But is that best?

I'm going to use what I have here, instead of acetone, I'll use a diesel/atf mix. Marvel mystery oil here is almost non existent.

You need something thin to get the oil into the cracks/crevices/nooks/crannies.


Paint thinner
Charcoal lighter fluid?
Gas or, even better, petrol

hardware store should have acetone and paint thinner
