Battery charging question.
Silly question, does anyone see a problem using the bolt holding the blue cable in front of the battery as a chassis ground while charging the battery? It will function as my negative battery terminal, in other words.

That sounds like a good place to clip on. It should be a good ground point.

Why avoiding the battery terminal?

Some say to connect the ground wire to the body as the second connection to avoid creating a spark right at the battery, which could have hydrogen gas near it.

That's only in case if you need to jump start the car.
It's recommended....not necessary.

I'm actually trickle charging. Somehow, I feel more comfortable not using both battery posts for that purpose, but can't say about the science behind that thinking. BTW, okay to trickle charge leaving both battery cables connected, charger clip to the positive battery post, negative to the bolt on the chassis? Should be, right?

If you're charging the battery in the car with terminals connected....you need to remove the cell's caps on top of the battery.
When you finished with charging, allow battery to cool down for about 2 hours, replace the caps and you're done.
You can connect the charger directly on terminals, but make sure that you turn on and turn off the charger from power supply
BEFORE you connect and disconnect the charger clamps.
You can also do the charging in your way too.
