P80 p0340 Camshaft Position Sensor 9146108 and 9202134 (1998 MY change)

Post by greenvolvo »

Model : S70 SE
Engine : 2.4 NA
Year : 2000

Hi

I am new to this forum, but I've been scrolling and reading around for a long time.

I got a p0340 code. The symptons that I have are very similar to what have seen around (car won't start, then will start 30 minutes later, rough idle, etc). So I decided to change the Camshaft Position Sensor, hoping it's not the wiring.

Seems like there is two type of Camshaft Position Sensor. One that look like this :

Image

and one that look like this Image

Question 1 : my understanding is that the Camshaft Position Sensor in my 2000 Volvo S70 NA is the cable-like one and that the other Camshaft Position Sensor does not apply to my model? Is my assumption correct?

Question 2 : I went to the junkyard and got a cable CPS (part number 9186811). It's seems to be the exact same thing than the 9202134, other than the fact that's it looks like 9186811 is sold only through Europeans vendors. I don't think that would make a difference, but does anyone had any issue regarding these two parts?

Regards

Don't have time right now to do the searches to answer your questions but FYI the top pic is of a cam position sensor (mounts at the end of the exhaust cam), bottom pic is of a crank position sensor (mounts down near the flywheel).

Edit :

Thanks erivk11! I must admit that I was confused, since some online parts retailers are presenting both items as camshaft position sensor.

According to IPD vehicule guide, the round camshaft position sensor doesn't fit my 2000 S70 (engine B5244S), but it does fit older model before 1998/99, such as the B5254FS. Is it possible that Volvo replaced the round camshaft position sensor with the cable one around the year 2000? It does appear that in later model of the V70 (2001 and later) the camshaft sensor is a cable one. I am still confused.

Use the 9146108 part number and confirm the part that comes up carries that number.

I see the same thing searching , it pulls up both cam and crank sensors

@abscate : the part I got at the junkyard is indeed 9146108.

I stumble on this picture of the engine I have in my S70 NA (B5244S2). I don't see any place where that particular part (9146108) is located.

It is buried under that rear (engine ) motor mount , the thing that looks like the Cyclops staring at you.

You have to tear a number of things off the engine to reach the cam sensor.

You can see the best "exploded" parts diagrams at volvopartswebstore.com and then put in your year, model, engine to get the right parts

I believe on a 2000 SE you have a variable Valve intake hub, so the cam sensor will be on the intake camshaft - towards the front of the car.

Several years ago I picked up the used cam sensor in my junk box to look at it and the connector crumbled In my hand.

Could that mean that the Camshaft Position Sensor is indeed a cabled-one and there is no need to change the housing, only the cable?

Yes, I totally messed up this thread

You have intake VVT, so the cam sensor is on the intake side. It looks like the one without the housing, visible in your picture as you circled it.
