removing rear tailshaft cv joint xc70

Has anyone replaced/checked/serviced their prop shaft cv joints. i didnt notice but the boot on my forward cv joint had torn. I checked my spare parts vehicle and the front cv was also torn but the rear wasnt.

Apparently the rear cv joint is not to be removed, you need to buy a complete tailshaft. i can confirm it does come off like the front but not easily, and it may be just as hard putting it back.

The rear boot is black like rubber, the front is grey like silicon.

Replacing the boot you need to remove the cv joint, not the driveshaft. dont think its possible without removing the Angle gear.

After packing new grease it moves alot better than it did, i put alot of grease, hopefully the boot doesnt explode.

As far as I know, and this is true on my 04-06’s, the front and rear CVJ is the same part. Check with coloradodriveshaft.com & they can verify if your earlier XC is the same. I can say their CVJ’s & boots are every bit as good as the ghastly expensive Volvo CVJ’s.

They use CVJ’s which are made in Turkey & Poland & the boots are very thick and durable.

Alternatively, and I have done this, you can source a very cheap CVJ kit off eBay & just use it for the boot, & have the actual CVJ for making welded art etc. They make for pretty cool eyes for terminator/robot looking creations.

As you know, and for reference for future readers, you pop this cap off, then remove the circlip beneath it.

As Pete explains you can remove either CV end for rebuild/repair. As his picture shows the entire driveshaft can be removed without removing the angle gear.

For removal: Detach the front CV (support it), detach the center carrier (support it), detach the rear CV (like the front).

I have replaced the front CV and boot with rebuild kit and cleaned and repacked the rear without issue.
