I wish this was closer. Would fit the C30 while refurbishing the current 18's. Oh well.

Found a listing for 06 s40 manual transmission with "blown head gasket" that won't start. Listing notes that it's sat in the driveway for 3 years. It's listed for $400. Would I be crazy for trying to fix it?

I followed up asking for mileage etc

Car jacked and did the U-turn back to Albany..

So the remote control Jacks on wheels lifted the car and spun it 180 and sent it on its way back to Albany. Jill can't wait to get her hands on those Jacks.

Humpty Dumpty out an egg crate on it, too.

Where are you paying $300 for a tow? Towing is expensive, but that's about double what I normally pay. And I still complain! Lol

It really depends how clean it is, but I have to agree... not a ton of space for resale. If you're just looking for a cheap driver, it could work.
Then again, if you're trying to save a little cash, you may be able to find a good engine for cheaper than machine work will cost and drop it right in with a new clutch. In my experience, that's proven to be easier and cheaper than redoing the head gasket, although there's more heavy lifting of course.

I suppose having just done all of this with my s70, I should have intuitively known all these side costs. Although the car is about 8 miles away so I don't think towing would be too bad.

I figured it would cost me 1500 doing all-in:
Head gasket, valve stem seals, head bolts and assorted gaskets ~$350
trip to my machine shop ~350
timingbelt/tensioner/waterpump kit ~150
tune up items like sparkplugs, air/fuel filters and new fluids ~150
New battery ~100
+400 Car
+100 tow
= 1600

I might be out of Volvo anaerobic sealant now, and actually need a cam locking tool this time. Thats obviously if the brakes, tires and clutch are fine. So yeah its a lot money for a car that might maaaybe start at that point, then I'd have to figure out how the head gasket got so bad that the car wouldn't start, and pray the clutch/transmission are fine. But it would be a fun project.. i thoroughly enjoyed doing the headgasket on my s70 (with no vvt lol)

Give it a good once over. You may get lucky and the brakes, clutch, and anything else may be just fine.
