XC90 A/C Blower Volume

Hi,

My daughters 2008 xc90 A/C system works but seems to have low air volume and takes a while to cool the car down. The air is cold in the vent.

I have noticed if I remove the cabin filter it does increase the volume.

Is this a known issue?

Any suggestions?

Does it make a difference if it is on recirculate?

The thick charcoal cabin filter does reduce the airflow. May also look at the blower from above (need to lift a little the windshield cowl) see if it's clogged with leaves. If the car has many miles, the blower motor may have worn brushes or may be seizing. Also look at the ac compressor lines around the engine, do they look covered with ice ? www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1vIWTG9-Zw

Thanks for the info. There is no compressor or A/C lines covered in ice. It seems like when she brakes or accelerates the volume changes.

Do the XC90s have a lower blower volume? Are there higher volume blower fans that can be installed?

You could check the voltage when the vehicle is running at the + stud on the driver side in the engine bay to make sure the alternator is outputting correct voltage ~14V or more.

The blower, although doable, isn't something you want to replace unless it's not operating correctly. Volvo's have an "adequate" air volume.
