Fault Code 323 Bank A1

Post by potroast »

I have fault code 323 in bank A1. That corresponds to "lock up slips or is not engaged"

What can I do to fix this?

ABS sensors clean? I've never read about that code, but it hints at a wheelspeed mismatch error, no?

from my understanding bank A1 is transmission, and 323 relates to the torque converter not locking up.

Dunno why you're quoting ABS?

potroast,

You are correct with the Socket A1 being the transmission. The code "323 Lock up slips or is not engaged" relates to the "locking" tourque converter.

First try a power flush of the transmission. You may have some debris keeping it from locking. This may flush it out.

The transmission is a weak point on our cars. It was designed to be a closed system requiring no periodic maintenance (fluid needs to be changed every 30 k per most mechanics I have talked to). There is not a filter in the trans. Typically the fluid braks down and that can cause various problems inside the trans. Other issues are the electronics inside the trans that can go out (I had solenoid problems).

Another issue is that there is no room to do a partial dis-assembly in the engine compartment or go through inspection covers (they have none). The trans must be removed for any type of service for parts. For that agrivation you will not want to do it more than once. I found that the rebuild price was not too far from a new trans from Volvo. I went with a new trans with a new tourque converter and I replaced the rear engine seal while we were there - keep in mind this is worst case and it may be corrected with a power flush. Do a search on transmissions...

Good luck

the flashing lambda went away immidiately following a transmission flush.

I am hoping that this fixed it, and was it was not a mere coincidence. I am at 163,000 miles, and i can't remember it being flushed recently, so it was time, anyway.

Good to hear that. I have a friend with a 95 GLT that flushes his every 15 k because of an "A1 321 Shift time too long" that will pop up when the fluid gets the slightest bit worn. He has been doing this for about 90K. I tried flushing 3 times before I gave in and replaced my trans with a new unit. You can also add a trans cooler for less than $75 that will also help prolong the trans fluid life (I have found a $65 kit at NAPA that splices in with-out much trouble that I plan to add when I service the trans in about 10K).

Cheers,

yes, I added a nice $50 hayden trans cooler to my truck because I tow with it. Perhaps it's a good idea to do the same with the volvo. I shall take some measurements and see what I can get that fits.
