You will need to pop the trim panel on the shifter up by using a flat head screwdriver from the edge closest to the drink holder up. Once it is up you can access the two bolts (T-25 star heads) that hold the A/C and radio cage. After unscrewing those (be careful not to drop the screws) you pull the bottom part you just unscrewed towards you until the entire unit pops free. It has a tongue in groove at the top that holds the unit in place so you will have to also pull down a little once you get it pulled far enough forward. After that you will need to disconnect the wiring on tghe back. Two connectors for the radio controls, one for the antenna, one for the A/C controls and one for the lighter at the bottom. These are all fairly easy to diconnect except the A/C plug as it is kind of crammed in there and takes a little force and manuvering to get free. Once the housing is all unplugged you should be able to remove the entire unit. There is 7 more T-25 star screws connecting the unit. 3 at the top, 2 in the middle and 2 at the bottom. Remove these all. Next there is tabs along the side. Use a flat head to gentle pop the tabs out starting at the bottom and working towards the top where the radio is housed. Once these are free you should be able to remove the radio unit from the rest of the A/C housing. Now your radio can be removed by poping the remain tabs and pulling it out from the cage it is in.

Remember you will need an after market double din dash kit and a wiring conversion kit for the new radio. You will also most likely need a dremel or cutting instrament to modify the back of the cage holding the radio as it is molded to house a HU-650 radio and it's wiring. Also you will probably need to remove the console cubby cup to make the new factory dash kit fit properly. It has a set of teeth on the top and bottow that will need to be gently pried out as well, and should pop out fairly easy.
Now you need to wire the wiring kit to the radio using the sfter market wiring kit. The color codes are fairly straight forward. I suggest using wiring caps at least for the Power (Yellow or Red wires) and the Ground (Black wires) for easy of connections and security in case of a short. the rest can be twisted together and electrical taped if you don't wish to use caps. Check to see if the connection are blocked by the back of the cage housing and cut out the back accordingly. The plastic if hard and pretty thick, so I recommend a dremmel on it for ease of removal. If your new radio comes with a DVD player you will also nned to ensure that the parking wire is connected to the ground if you wish to use it while the car is in anything except park.
You should be able at this point to reassemble the housing using the aftermarket dash kit and hopefully everything aligns and snaps and screws into place correctly. Reinstallation is easy but there is a couple of things to keep in mind. First if the new radio has a GPS or iPod cable you will need to route those out before final assembly. I took the GPS antenna and brought it across the back of the glove box over to the airbag access panel on the passenger side and then up to the dash. I wedged the cable in between the dash and the side post as to not interfere with the panel or airbag. Next I removed the side console trim on the passenger side (there is a plastic screw beside the seat. Use a quarter to turn counter clockwise then pull back towards the back of the vehicle then out) and routed the iPod cable through the floor vent open. The vent seal is foan so it is flexible to allow the cable and still maintain the seal when reassembled.
Now connect all the cables back to the A/C radio unit. tuck the cabling back into the dash area to get it out of the way. Tilt the entire unit so the bottom is closest to you and the top groove is close to the tongue at the top and lift and push. I found it easier to do this from the passenger seat. Also you may need to move the shifter back a few gears to get it out of the way. I set the parking brake and put the key in and set it for the position before start and was able the move the shifter without turning on the car. Put the bottom screws back in, mov e the shifter back to park and pop the trim back in place. Done!

Just one point to add to what Mike has written, disconnect the battery negative wire before you disconnect/ remove the aircon control panel otherwise if you pop the key in without the panel connected the car will throw an airbag fault which requires a main dealer reset unless you have or know someone with Vida/ DiCE to reset the fault code - Mike

Hi guys. Can you tell me if the backup beepers worked still after replacing the HU 650?

My rear speakers crack and have no sound (no music or beeps) for the rear doors nor rear speakers in the wagon. Doors work ok.

Even when I disconnect the connector labeled "AMP" under the front seat, which is not an amp, I still have front speakers, but no rear.

Anyway if I replace the HU with an aftermarket will by rear parking sensors still beep? Anything I need to do?

No they don't, they work thru the stock HU
As for the speakers, you did something wrong.

There is no underseat amp with a 650

Please start a new thread for your different question in future, Stockholm.

However, the tweeters are connected to the bass speakers in the door with a capacitor as a crossover. Changing the head unit would not result in a problem with the tweeters.

However, the new head unit might have the treble turned down, or might be configured to send the bass to the front output and the treble to the back. Check your head unit manual. If you have bass, you should be able to get sound from the tweeters in the front doors.

I pulled my unit out to switch it out and accidentally pulled the plug to the AC unit and now have the airbag fault. I have a Vida/DiCE unit .... how do you reset it with Vida/DiCE not being an expert on driving the thing?

And yes I knew about not pulling the AC plug and/or disconnecting the battery ..... the battery is rather hard to access as this thing is my work vehicle and full of tools and so I was lazy. My last Volvo was an S60 and that had 2 plugs on the back of the sound system ..... this one only has one plug and then I saw a second and went "there you are" and pulled it and immediately realised it was the AC plug .... total bugger.

Hi EngeneeringBloke,

Thank you for you answer.
I think that from the 6.5" speakers in the front door should be coming only mids and lows and no hights.
After the change of the stereo unit from the 6.5" speakers are functioning as coaxial speakers ( playing highs mids and lows ), and the tweets are not giving any sound,
If there is any configuration in the head unit as you are suggesting that the front 6.5" speakers should be lacking highs.
I am really puzzled by this.
Do you know if Is any crossover to the 6.5" speakers in the front as well?
Please correct me if I am wrong.
