I have a 91 240 4cyl with 110,000mile and a gas engine. I noticed the other day that it was running hot so I checked and it was low on coolant so I put some in it. I left and as I was going down the highway the engine started smoking really bad and I was loosing power (I'm assuming it overheated). I pulled over and when I checked under the hood coolant had spayed out all over the engine. I noticed that the bottom hose on the radiator had a hole so I replaced it. I then put coolant back in it. I started it back up and it seemed ok but when I shut it off I heard a weird sloshing sound coming from I think the radiator. I let it sit for a day. When I came back and started it up and again noticed it was started to smoke. It actually looks like the coolant is coming out of the reserve tank.
Any ideas.
I was also wondering if there is a separate radiator cap?
thanks,
jason

You may have warped the head by overheating. You most likely did in the thermostat too so that the entire cooling-heating cycle will be messed up. Check your oil and see if you have coolant in it. If you have no more hose leaks be sure to replace or check the thermostat and then see what happens. If you get more coolant exiting the expansion tank then you may need to redo the head.

thanks for the post
I've checked the oil and there isn't any coolant in it. So I should check the thermostat and the head?

Either the coolant tank cap or the hose underneath has popped.
The cooant tank cap is the pressure fitting.
After filling it with coolant you need to bleed it or burp the air out.
queeze the upper hose a few times to get the air up to the coolant tank.
