They were dry at the beginning of the thread maybe.

Speaking of threads. My V70 has a stripped cam cover bolt hole that creates a slow and annoying leak. But you can see from the top that the oil stain congregates around that bolt.

There are few places that the oil can come from other than the rear front cam seal or the head gasket. It could have been a leaking oil filler seal, but the oil tends to leak over to the driver's side more than here.
It is unlikely to be the oil pump (behind the crank pulley) due to where the oil is coming from or the crank pulley seal for the same reasons as they are lower down, but hey, it is possible.
Like abscate and Erik state, there may be new cam seals, but that does not mean they may have not seated correctly, got nicked in fitting or pushed out as can happen with some aftermarket seals.
The only other area that I can think of is then the head gasket. If it had been 99- then maybe the VVS would be a possibility.
It has been said that it could be oil from the front side of the engine being 'blown' up the back by air flow. Then it could open up the possibilities to things like oil pipes to the oil thermostat or leaking oil filter seal or even the PCV tank or pipes.
Good hunting!
Neil.

Unless jreed's has less than 150,000 miles, servicing and restoring lubrication system could improve. Our '97 850 is coming for next tb service. It is tempting to restore lubrication system, and discover a little after the oil pan is off.

Thanks. My next step is to remove the upper inner timing belt cover and get a closer look at the front exhaust cam seal, since that seems to be the consensus. This '97 855 GLT has 222k miles. I haven't yet restored the lubrication system as you mentioned above -- does that mean to replace the o-ring in the oil pick up tube in the oil drain pan area? Thanks again for the advice and suggestions. Appreciated!
