Broken Driver Door

Post by stevenbsmith »

 My wife's S70 has approx 65,000 miles
Tonight, the driver's door made a loud CREAK as she opened the door.
Dutiful husband, thinking the neglected door needed some grease on the joint, proceeds to place some lithium in the suspected area.

No result.

Up further examination, the portion of the actual body/frame where the door hinge mounts in the door jam appears to have simply sheared lose.

compared to the other door, where the metal is smooth and continuous, the metal on the driver door is ripped and jagged.

I'm so disguisted I could scream. Has anybody else heard of this!!!

If it makes you feel any better, the door check strap and related metal is a weak point with the 850/70 design. This happens to many people.

From southwestauto.com:
A loud click upon opening your 850, S/V70 door indicates a loose door strap bolt possibly requiring only tightening to fully correct. Left this way it will progress to torn metal around the door strap and a much more expensive repair. A #40 torx drive bit is required to tighten this bolt.

Same thing happened on my 97 850glt

I posted almost same message back in Oct.

I also e-mailed Volvo but got no satisfaction. I had it spot welded at a body shop but the welds only lasted a couple of months. The shop says it a poor design and a major job to fix correctly.

I have the same problem with my 98 S70. Volvo wants about $280 to fix it on a car that has 65,000 miles also. The window motor also just cost me $450. I am ready to drive it through the dealer window!
Thanks -
