2002 S60-Transmission Service

I have alittle over 93,000 on my Volvo. I know I am going to need to get the fluid changed. To get it done, one place said it will cost $400 so my mechanic is willing to do it for me. When he went to see what fluid to use, it said a Dexron III. But yet he also got info that he should be using a synthetic fluid.

What should he use?

On your car, only use #3309 fluid. It's often called a synthetic but that seems to be an argument in semantics. You can buy the fluid from several on-line vendors (Mobil-3309) and since some Toyota's use the same Aisin-Warner transmissions their parts department sells it for (it's called Type-IV ATF) considerably cheaper than the Volvo dealer. Using Dexron III will do harm to your transmission. There is a good write-up on doing this flush in our repair database including information about the type of fluid. I suggest you print it off for your mechanic if he's going to do it. If you're fairly savvy, it's not difficult to do it yourself either.

I just bought a high mileage T5 and after sifting thru the maintenance records I can't find a trans fluid change. Guess I'm due. Does the advice you gave Tanya apply to my 01 model with a manual trans? Are there any procedures posted anywhere that you know of?

No, no real rush.
Just change with the Volvo fluid whenever.....
