Hy Dudes,
i have a question : my gearbox has 93000. I hear my gearbox, at low speed, more than it should I think it makes a little noise, as if there was sand in it, you can hear the sprockets turning, the gearbox was emptied less than 930 miles ago. `
Should I use a thicker oil ?
Does it means that I should replace it ?
When I change a speed, I hear well the "noise" when the fork works, but the clutch has also 930 miles...
Any advice ?
Manov

My first question is why did you initially replace the clutch and gearbox oil? Was the issue already present?manovlov wrote: ↑27 Jun 2020, 12:59 Hy Dudes,

Did you use the official Volvo gear oil? Is the level correct after the refill was performed?
Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

I replace the clutch because he was a the end of his life. I changed the oil (OEM gearbox transmission oil) because I 've just buy the car, a sort of "0" stage.
Yes the level has been completed til where he should have been.

Hi Manov. Did you replace the clutch release bearing when you swapped out the clutch?
If you didn't it may well be the bearing is failing or if you replaced ti it may be bad. As I have not had a manual trans, I don't know if there is a spigot bearing in the end of the crankshaft, and if there is if it is a brass bush or needle bearing.
If the sound changes with pressing the clutch peddle it is likely one or other of those that is bad rather than the transmission.
Was the problem there before you replaced the clutch?
Neil.

Hy Neil,
Good question. While I was picking up th car from Amsterdam to Lyon, I didn't hear anything... I will check the list of parts I've bought when the clutch was replaced.
Thanks a lot for the "track".
Here's the parts I've bought from Skandix. Manov
By the way, do I need to buy this tool to extract the tie rods ? Does someone know the exact reference of this tool ?

That tool looks like it could make the job easier, but no, you don't NEED it. It can be done with normal tools.
What condition was the old gear lube in? was it thick? maybe someone was nursing it along? Maybe it is just because the oil is clean and new. Do you have someone else with a manual 850 you could compare with?

My view is if the problem/noise was not there before the work, something has changed from what has been done.
Looking at the list, if there is a pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft to support the gearbox main shaft it is not listed unless it was included in the clutch kit. My experience of clutch kits would say that it is not included.
FLXC90 makes fair comments, but to me if something does not sound right then chances are it is not.
Finally, although Volvo part numbers are listed, at those prices I would be surprised if some if any are OE or even OEM parts. Not sure who makes Volvo manual clutch parts these days, but it used to be Sachs or Borg and Beck.
Neil.

Hy Neil,
Thanks to U for your analysis. You may be right. I have to study the issue closer. I 've got a V70 from 1998 which is my donor for certain numbers of parts that go on the 850. As I've never disassembled a gearbox from an engine before, it will be for me the occasion to learn the "how to DIY" way.
Once i wil have done this, I will be able to renew the operation on the 850.
To be honest, there was a noise when I picked up the car, which came from suspensions. I don't remember gearbox noise on my way from Netherland to France.
Anyway, thanks again to share yours knowledges on that car.

Yes there is a pilot bearing/bushing. I couldn't find it at FCPs site, but Volvo US showed it. 20$ part. 1397077. The Skandix clutch Kit should only be disc and pressure plate by the lower part number
