Transmission cooler installed

Post by Rvolvos »

Got around installing a transmission cooler for our 2006 V70.
Purchase a cooler from Ebay, had already a Magnafine filter installed in an attempt to increase the lifespan of the transmission and 5 drain and refills. Replaced the filter again.

In an attempt to increase the air flow to the radiator I relocated the horns left and right of the air dam. Used the horn mounting point for the upper cooler mounts. The hoses are routed behind the crush bar.

Ambient temperature Was 90 F, measured oil temperature out of the radiator cooler, 80 degrees C , atf going into secondary cooler 75C, going out 35C. All measurements done with infrared thermometer.
During driving max. Recorded transmission temperature with Vida 95C.

The general consensus is, an additional transmission oil cooler helps getting the oil temperature down which increases oil life and life of the transmission. I am planning on doing this on all of our cars with an automatic transmission. Cheap insurance.

Volvo transmissions routinely run 300k with routine maintenance in stock configuration.

Well this car ( vin ending with 13) had the transmission replaced by the previous owner under warranty at 100k
When I bought it (140k) started with drain and fills because the transmission fluid was black.
The car Is going to move to SoCal with ambient temperature higher than in NorCal I figured an additional cooler could prolong the fluid life.

Routine maintenance is not recommend by Volvo and none of the first owner do this and sell the car when it becomes old, the one who do, don’t sell the car ;-) I have bought 5 Volvo’s with no maintenance done to the transmission. Last car a white C30 donor car, one owner, family member of Volvo sale manager. No service records on transmission maintenance.
