Hi all,
Have a 2005 Volvo V70 2.5t AWD with 256,700 Kilometers that is experiencing a faint ticking/rattling noise from the front end (closer to the centre/passenger side).
The noise is present during low speeds and speed increase (however most noticeable at low speeds, under 50 km/hr). I cannot recreate the sound while at idle, only while driving. I also hear a quick, faint, 1 time "clunk" from somewhere near the passenger side when I quickly accelerate from a low speed.
I just happened to hear the full on ticking today with my climate fans and radio off by complete fluke. I was under the impression there had been a rock in my tires when I first heard the noise a month ago and shrugged it off.
I have done a lot to this car in the last 2 months. PCV rebuild, new front struts and mounts, 2 wheel alignments, rear sway bar links, complete ABS rebuild, new crank sensor. I assumed my mechanics would've noticed something out of place but apparently not! The car drives like new, accelerates and shifts smoothly. No smoke blowing out the exhaust, no rough idle in the interior, no "knocking" from the engine. My mechanic commented on how quiet the engine is actually.
My mechanic is looking at it again next week and suspects the angle gear sleeve may be starting to fail. My own research (based on the sounds I'm hearing) link me towards
-Bad lower engine mount on right side
-CV axle
However, wouldn't doubt it if the angle gear was messed up.
Any further insight into this would be much appreciated!
2005 V70 2.5t AWD ticking/rattling Topic is solved
I'm also replacing the upper torque mount next week as it's completely shot, and apparently that may cause some strange noises as well. Again, drivability feels completely normal/regular. I even pushed it a bit on the highway home and everything sounded/felt fine at high speed

You can check the cv joints pretty easily with the wheels turned - I don't recommend lifting the wheels and running the engine in D, I damaged my axles that way, www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJQkFPYjh5E
Otherwise, the faint clunk when accelerating, may be from the sway bar bushings to the subframe, or even subframe bushings, but can also be from engine mounts or torque mounts or from the end links and even from spring seats. Pretty hard to say, depending what was already replaced and with which brands
For the rattle, maybe the exhaust manifold heat shield ? Or maybe the right axle carrier bearing.. just things to check. I'm not familiar with the AWD, the angle gear is surely shot if it was never replaced, but not sure if it would rattle or not

So if I may, the frequency of the ticking changes with road speed, not engine RPM?
Have you done any work to the RWD driveline? I once had a rhythmic ticking that changed with road speed only, sounded a lot like a rock hitting a dust shield (very tinny & easy to dismiss as unimportant). It turned out that one of the 6 bolts that holds the front driveshaft CV joint to the bevel gear had gone missing. When this happens, there is a “kidney bean” shaped washer that swings outward and hits both the downpipe as well as the high psi power steering line. Anyhow, hopefully it’s not your collar sleeve, but that’s another possibility.

Everything done to that car has been replaced with OEM Volvo, no IPD or anything. The only suspension components I've recently replaced are front struts and mounts, and rear sway bar links.
I'll ask them to comb through all the engine mounts and front end suspension components, plus the axles, next week when it goes in again. The owner of the shop gave them hell for not noting down any concerns about noise coming from the front end as they've essentially taken most of it apart multiple times in the last 2 months. Willing to give me a deal if the angle gear happens to be messed up.
I'll keep ya guys posted. Honestly, with city/highway noise, radio on, climate on, you don't hear a dam thing. Engine purrs nicely, turbo spools up when it's supposed to, acceleration is smooth and linear.

That's a weird noise, I would be worried to hear this. It doesn't appear to follow the engine revs, rather the car speed. I'm really not good with AWD but I would want to check the propshaft carrier bearing and things like that. Even for a CV joint I think it's too noisy unless a joint is really damaged and you will surely hear a nice clack clack in tight turns at low speed
