Based on what I've seen on my '97 855, using OEM Volvo hoses, I would say it's not normal for good radiator hoses to be hard. New OEM hoses are definitely soft and pliable. With age, the hoses sometimes become harder. Sometimes the hoses have a date code stamped or printed on them. You could check to see if your hoses have a code on them. If they are really old, that could explain why they are hard.
1997 855 GLT (Light Pressure Turbo) still going strong. Previous: 1986 240 GL rusted out in '06, 1985 Saab 900T rusted out in '95, 1975 Saab 99 rusted out in '95, 1973 Saab 99 rusted out in '94

They are hard after heating. Nothing else happens. The fluid does not disappear. Does not throw through the cap. Maybe the cap does not release excess pressure?jreed wrote: ↑10 Jul 2020, 05:47 Based on what I've seen on my '97 855, using OEM Volvo hoses, I would say it's not normal for good radiator hoses to be hard. Once the car is hot they will be hard from pressure , that is normal!

With a normal functioning rad cap, those hoses will be under 21psi of pressure. 2/3 the pressure that your tires have. I'd be more looking into the other car on why it's not building pressure in the cooling system.
