850 Broken bolt

Hy Buddies

While I was replacing my control arms, I've seen that the bolt that helps to place the wheel correctly on the hub was broken inside the hub. The brake disk moves a bit when I brake.

My question is : does someone could advice me about the right tool to buy, which quality drill and reverse drill should I use ?

Hi Manovlov!

Which bolt are you talking about? The small 10mm headed bolt/pin that locates the wheel in relation to the hub? The one that goes through a hole in the rotor/disc?

If it has broken it is not the end of the world. I have driven cars without a bolt there at all. Some of the hubs have 2 holes 1880 degrees from each others.

I have not needed to drill the bolt out as often it had threads through the back of the hub. Had to remove the caliper and the rotor, and then I was able to get a pair of Vice-Grips onto the back of the bolt thread and wind it out from the rear of the hub.

If you have 2 holes in the hub, grind the broken one flat and use the other hole. If not, grind it flat, use a center metal punch and punch a dimple in the bolt and drill it with a small drill. I have found this often turns the bolt remains out itself.

Salut Neil,

Huge cool to read your post ! Yes I speak about the one that goes across the disk and the hub (10 mm). I've just been surprise to see the disk move a bit while I was trying to put back the wheel. I don't worry about this pin, but if I may put things in order I would like to.

Thanks a lot for the mécanicle advice, I will test it quickly.

i have another question : to replace bushes on the front axle bar, it's necessary to cut the car in its length, or to slow down a bit the subframe (most frequently used method) ?

You can get away with undoing the rear of the subframe and lowering it slightly. You only need a few extra mm to get sufficient clearance.

Our friend Cookeh has covered the question. Be careful not to drop the rear of the sub-frame too much or you can stress and break the top radiator hose at the radiator.

As to the bolt/pin, it is just there to help align the wheel to the bolt holes. Newer wheel son't work with the pins as they do not have the hole to help align them. Many just replace the pin with a 10mm bolt or just don't bother at all.

When the wheel attachment bolts are tight, there should be no movement of the brake disc with out the small alignment pin. If the disc is moving during braking, retorque the wheel bolts.
