S, It looks to be closer to Syracuse than where I am right now (Massena/Malone area). Once this Covid 19 subsides, I'll be traveling to Syracuse. I can let you know when that is/will be in about a month. We can venture to Albany as well. I'll keep you posted! Safe travels on your upcoming journey!!

Here is a pic of the cir clip that was on the shaft. Are there parts/pieces missing? Just want to make sure I am putting right clip back in!
Thanks for your replies!

No looks ok but weird it looks rusted. I'd give it a light rub with fine paper to clean it before installing it again.

Well done on getting the axle out!

Thanks, Neil!!!

Well, I put everything back together and then went for a test drive. Heard a rubbing noise, metal against metal, noticeable above 10 mph. Took the wheel, rotor and caliper off, looked at the backing plate. There was clearly a mark grained in it in one spot, but I could not figure out what was rubbing against it. There were no noticeable shiny spots on the rotor. Last night and again this morning after taking the backing plate off, and after re-installing the rotor, caliper, and tire, there was still a low grade hum coming from the transmission. I can't think of what it would be, except maybe that cir clip was not functioning as it should. There was very slight movement of the shaft in and out of the transmission housing - should there be once the shaft is fully seated?
Any thoughts??

I could put all four wheels up again, start the car, put it in drive, and see if the CV shaft/axle is wobbling any.
Appreciate your replies!

An update:
After re-installing the axle and all the other parts to get the car moving, I took it for a test drive. Starting out was okay, but after a short distance (<half a mile) I noticed the humming noise again. I was not happy. When I got home and looked under the car, the axle was again not fully seated and fluid had leaked out. The axle had come out again, about a quarter of an inch from the transmission housing. Once again, I took everything apart, seated the axle in the transmission housing, and re-assembled everything. After another test drive, the same thing was happening - noticeable humming noise!

Am I not doing something to make sure the axle stays in the transmission housing? Do I need to turn the axle slightly before re-assembling everything? Left or right? HELP!! I am seriously perplexed!

On the plus side, it is taking less time to tear everything apart and re-assemble!

Appreciate all your suggestions!

More questions:
Is there a seal that the axle butts up against when the shaft is inserted into the transmission housing?
Any idea what this is called? Dimensions?
Am trying to figure out why the axle won't stay in the tranny!

Man you have had a challenge with this. Sorry to hear that.

Can you look into the area where the retainer clip sits. My concern would be either the axle clip retainer recess has been damaged, or the retainer seat in the axle itself may have been.

To answer your question on the seal, there is only the outer axle seal.

It may be time to buy an OE spring retainer. IT could also be the original clip has lost it's 'spring' so has collapsed into the recess not locking the axle in place. I think this is the most likely issue.

Good Luck!

Can you describe to me where the outer axle seal is located?
