AC Lines Running Hot 98 V70

Hi Everyone,

So throughout the summer I've noted that the engine bay area has seemed to be a lot hotter than normal. I know that it seems like a red herring as it is summer, however i think i pinned it down to the AC lines that feed out of the compressor (High pressure side). I have attached some thermal imagery of the lines to dictate what i have observed.

The compressors normal temperature at stand still and running for roughly 5 minutes is 86 C. The high pressure line peaked around 96 C and low pressure side was hard to measure (heavily insulated so temperatures are likely not indicative of what is actually measured.

Could this simply be caused by the wrong refrigerant? I do not believe the compressor will be damaged as it is not reaching thermal cutoff levels of around 100C + from thermal imagery. I am running redtek R12A as we did not have access to R134A up here in Canada, and it was an extremely hot day.

I have a project car with a charged AC that i can use as a control to compare the data too, ill post the findings later.

Anyways, what are your thoughts on this?

The temperature seems a little high

Instead of 90 C I would expect something closer to 70 C or maybe less.

To really know what’s going on you need to measure the low side pressure and the high side pressure

Those FLIR devices are averaging a 15-30 cm spot depending on how close you are to the engine. Be careful what you are actually measuring as there are lots of hot things around

Temperature is not a good surrogate measurement for AC performance, you can measure high pressure side right from obd and low side with a cheap gauge, just like the pros
