Dissasembled the PCV system, looking for which parts to buy

Hi,

I removed the PCV system today, because the car (1996 Volvo 850, non-turbo 2,4L 10V B5252S engine) failed the glove test and the dipstick smoke test.
It was actually easier to do than I expected, no screw that snapped off or was rounded in the whole process. :lol:
I didn't order the parts yet because I wanted to see which gaskets, plastic parts etc. are broken or break while disassembly, so I don't have to pay shipping costs multiple times.

I noticed several of these rubber connectors that connect small vacuum hoses fell apart. The one for the smaller of the two PCV hoses wasn't even attached anymore. (I think the left side would go to the intake manifold, but the right side? Does it go to the small connector on the flame trap?)

There was less dirt in the parts and hoses than I expected. The oil trap actually looks quite good and the hoses also do so, only the small connectors seem to be the problem. Any better way to test the oil trap than blowing through it, covering the smaller hole that connects to the block and see if the air comes out of the bigger hose that goes to the flame trap?
Could the smaller hose cause the problems? Or the resulting small vacuum leak?

There was some water in the lower hole though, I guess it's just some condensate, because the car only drove a short distances in the last time, there's no milky oil anywhere else (like in the oil filler cap) and I did a head gasket test recently (with the liquid that changes color) and it indicated no problem.

Should I buy a complete new kit or just repair the broken parts and clean it (I would use carb/throttle cleaner)?
I would order from Skandix, they offer an upgraded version, does anyone know what's the difference? It would also need a new air intake hose. I find a lot of information about other variants of the PCV system (turbos or the one with the hose going through the intake manifold into the middle of the valve cover) but not so much about the one I have.

Oh and I have a bonus question: I saw the starter has some kind of bracket which just doesn't fit to the hole it could be bolted to nearby. Did someone change the starter and bough one that's too short or used the wrong bracket?

I mean it works, but occasionally it makes funny noises when starting.

You can remove that bracket and recycle it. Volvo removed it in later models. It’s weird that that it does not fit the hole in the block. My guess would be that an aftermarket starter was installed of slightly shorter length

I just finished my 98 V70 PCV today. Purchase a Volvo kit specific to you make/model, insures you have everything you need for a quality rebuild.
