04 S60 Rack Replacement

Post by br0dy519 »

Hi guys. My steering rack is leaking...great! It's an s60 2004 2.4t with chassis # 384142. I'm sure this question has been asked MANY times. But there's so many different racks for my car. I think 5 in total which makes matters worse. My mechanic says it has NO power assist and THREADED connection. Does that mean I can basically use any rack with the above attributes? Volvo dealer parts department was nice but useless and I ended up with P/N 8684268 which doesn't give me anything.

There is a junk yard here with a 2004 V70 with a good rack that has NO power assist and THREADED connection. Can I use that rack? Does the ZF thing matter? I'm getting new MOOG outer tie rods anyway ES80982/81. I'm concerned now that none of the parts I'm purchasing will be compatible.

Main reason I ask he says it is "ZF" but non-speed assist.. this doesn't make sense with all the parts list I'm seeing ZF as the speed-assist version and SMI as the NON-speed assist.. help!

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

All these cars have power assist. Maybe he meant no variable assist sensor. Look at the pump, is the outgoing metal line secured with a big nut, or has a small bolt on the side ? The first would be an SMI rack usually from 01-mid 04, second ZF. Basically look at the power steering pump at the junkyard car, has to have the same hard line connection. You can also look the the dust boot on the inner tie rod, on the side of the boot you may see marked SMI (just turn a wheel and look with a flash light). For the lower coupler, I suggest disconnecting it from inside the car - usually is completely stuck on the rack itself
