Dash dead / Windows won’t open

Post by bfry »

2006 XC90 2.5T AWD

New engine and new transmission.

Both “matched” to make sure compatible with VIN

Car runs like new, BUT dash completely dead - no lighting on it, no gauges work, no odometer and windows will not move. Radio works fine.

All working beforehand.

Only other thing worth mentioning is that I pulled temperature control unit months before the install and replaced it with an exact part # to troubleshoot why blower motor wasn’t working - airbag light came on after I did this. Temperature control unit was not the problem with blower motor so I put original unit back in and airbag light stayed on...but it’s obviously off now - hahah.

Thoughts?

Thank you.

Thank you - just read that post.

I guess maybe it could be the DIM? Don’t know that that would explain the windows though.

Would be highly coincidental that DIM just happens to go when swapping engine and transmission IMO but I’m really scratching me head on this one.

In my 02 v70xc, the DIM does control the windows. I had sent the DIM to “RBM” I think, for a re-solder, drove the car without it, no turn signals, no windows! 🤣

So, finally scanned the car...

2 codes found =

372: CEM-DF07 CAN-H, low speed network. Faulty signal. Short circuit between CAN L and CAN H in the low speed network.

372: CEM-E001 Control Module Communication. Short circuit between the control area network (CAN) wiring and/or open circuit in one of the CAN cables and/or internal fault in the control module and/or internal fault in another control module in the same area of the CAN.

No idea how to address - any thoughts? Only so much I know how to do on my own and electrical is probably my weakest skill - trying to avoid dealer if at all possible.

Quick recap is me and a buddy replaced engine and transmission. Car drives great but dash is dead and now only driver side windows won’t work. Also, blower motor will stay on when key is out of ignition along with DTSC light staying on. Both turn off after about a minute.

Maybe we screwed something up in engine harness when installing engine?

Previous to engine/transmission install, everything worked except blower motor would not function.

Thank you.

Found this online which seems to be exactly what I'm looking for - hopefully this can help someone else too. I'm going to follow this flow chart tomorrow and will post results...

Haven’t followed the flow chart above yet but
I cleared codes after yesterday and when I started the car this morning the dash actually came alive - everything lit up, gauges spun around but then after a second or two it went dead again. This happens everytime I start the car now - I’m listing this symptom in case it is indicative of something that I’m not aware of - again, any thoughts, pls let me know.

Gonna follow flow chart now regardless...

Thx

Ok - so according to flow chart, my DIM is bad. So trying to decide whether to just replace it or send it in for repair...

DIM seems pretty expensive to repair...used ones are cheap...

Pros of repairing - I keep original mileage and “programming” and get a warranty. But aside from keeping car’s original mileage what’s the benefit of keeping original programming??

Cons of used unit - may break tomorrow, different mileage and not “programmed” to my specific car, but again, I don’t see how the DIM not being programmed to my specific car really matters - I mean it displays speed, rpms, temp, etc - it shows correct readings or not - right?

Am I missing something?
