Several weeks ago a Federal report was released detailing the US states exceeding 100 new cases per 100,000 population in a week. This calculation is based on a 7 day moving average of new daily cases. Since this number changes daily and I have seen little follow up on which states made the list, I created a new table for the information.

The concept behind the Red Zone list is that if a state exceeds 100 new cases per 100,000 people in a week, the state should take additional steps to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

The tables below show the Red Zone threshold limit in the far right column for each state. I found that many of the states in the list far exceeded the threshold. The table highlights each day in Yellow if the number is 1.0 to 1.5 times the limit. The table highlights each day in Orange if the number is 1.5 to 2.0 times the limit. The table highlights each day in Pink if the number is 2.0 to 3.0 times the limit. The table highlights each day in Purple if the number is greater than 3.0 times the limit.

Please Note: All highlighted cells are in the 'Red Zone'. Only uncolored cells are below the critical limit.

US Virgin Islands and Guam should be ignored. They have missing information.

Some states have improved over time and others have grown worse.

These tables show all available US states and territories and the COVID-19 data for the last 5 days. I have sorted the states alphabetically and added growth rates for last several days for all states with ranking of each day. Of course, this information changes daily. I have presented the table in two parts because of the screen shot, but it is actually one table in Excel.

Again, results change daily.
I am posting this information in the afternoon now (mostly). I try to do outdoor work in the cooler morning and indoor work in the afternoon.

State growth rates for August 13, 2020. All information is based on reported information and actual results may be different.

For your information, the top 5 states or territories yesterday in growth rate (the worst containment) are: Guam (0.275) with 477 cases, US Virgin Islands (0.265) with 682 cases, North Dakota (0.194) with 8171 cases, Hawaii (0.157) with 4312 cases, and Minnesota (0.146) with 62,993 cases. All states have reopened to various levels. Many states have now paused or reversed opening actions. US Virgin Islands has been in top 5 list for 12 of last 16 days. North Dakota has been in top 5 list for 29 of last 43 days. Hawaii has been in top 5 list for 14 of last 21 days. Minnesota has been in top 5 list for 5 of last 8 days. US Virgin Islands and Guam have few cases.

A column on the right shows the current growth rate divided by the 5 day moving average. Guam, North Caolina, and Navajo Nation were over 2.0 yesterday (red highlight). Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and Federal Prisions were over 1.5 yesterday (yellow highlight). This column is an early warning of increasing cases beyond day to day noise.

My calculated growth rate for USA is 0.0233 for yesterday, up slightly from previous day of 0.0228. This is not population or case number weighted.

State growth rates for August 16, 2020. All information is based on reported information and actual results may be different.

For your information, the top 5 states or territories yesterday in growth rate (the worst containment) are: South Dakota (0.144) with 10,274 cases, Minnesota (0.142) with 65,152 cases, North Dakota (0.123) with 8587 cases, Wyoming (0.110) with 3286 cases, and Wisconsin (0.077) with 65,741 cases,. All states have reopened to various levels. Many states have now paused or reversed opening actions. Minnesota has been in top 5 list for 8 of last 11 days. North Dakota has been in top 5 list for 31 of last 46 days.

My calculated growth rate for USA is 0.0150 for yesterday, down sharply from previous day of 0.0220. This is not population or case number weighted. This sharp drop is likely a 'weekend effect' and will not be sustained. The number of new cases in the US yesterday was down sharply to 36,843. The last time the US new case number was this low was on June 23, 2020.
I corrected the previous day US average. I made an error in the calculation.

State growth rates for August 21, 2020. All information is based on reported information and actual results may be different.

For your information, the top 5 states or territories yesterday in growth rate (the worst containment) are: US Virgin Islands (0.267) with 932 cases, Guam (0.199) with 767 cases, Minnesota (0.168) with 68,133 cases, North Dakota (0.166) with 9474 cases, and Arkansas (0.157) with 55,652 cases. All states have reopened to various levels. Many states have now paused or reversed opening actions. US Virgin Islands has been in top 5 list for 18 of last 24 days. Guam has been in top 5 list for 5 of last 8 days. Minnesota has been in top 5 list for 12 of last 16 days. North Dakota has been in top 5 list for 35 of last 51 days. US Virgin Islands and Guam have few cases.

A column on the right shows the current growth rate divided by the 5 day moving average. No areas were over 2.0 yesterday (red highlight). Arkansas, Massachusetts, Montana, Oklahoma, South Dakota, US Virgin Islands, and US Military were over 1.5 yesterday (yellow highlight). This column is an early warning of increasing cases beyond day to day noise.

My calculated growth rate for USA is 0.0204 for yesterday, up sharply from previous day of 0.0184. This is not population or case number weighted.

In the last few days, a new column has been added to the table - Total Recovered.
