Gas in oil will not start, 91 940 turbo.

Post by Netmonster »

Hello all,

This is my first post and I hope you guys and gals can help. So here goes.

I have a 91 940 turbo with 185k miles. For the past few weeks, it's been hard to start and running a little rough until you really gave it some gas then it would run fine until you let it sit for a few hours. I was thinking it needed a tune up.

My wife called me on the way home the other day and said the car was overheating. Since she was only a few blocks from home and I was an hour away, I told her to make it to the house. It ended up being a freeze plug. I bought one from my local Volvo dealer, $6 with tax and replaced it.

I tried to start the car; it turns over but will not start. I checked the spark plugs and cables to make sure they were getting spark and they all were. Since it overheated, I checked the oil to see it there was water, and to my surprise I found that there was a heavy odor of gasoline. I drained the oil and sure enough, there is a lot of gas in the oil.

So I guess the question is what are some things I should check?

Thanks in advance,

KC

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Have any fault codes been logged? Your car has an in-built diagnostic unit which you can interrogate without going to a repair shop.

Instructions for using it are at: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/chat/p ... c&start=12

Although headed 740 it also applies to the 940.

Update: I used the method described in the link above, but all my codes come back 1-1-1. Any Ideas where to look next?

Thanks again,

Kris

I had hoped that the diagnostic check would shed some light on the problem so it looks like it's back to basics.

You say there is a lot of gas in the oil. Had you noticed this before this problem arose? It could be the result of prolonged trying to start the car and flooding the engine and not, in itself, a contributing factor.

Things to check when the engine cranks normally but won't start are:

Cold start valve.
Vacuum and wiring connections.
Coolant temp sensor.
Fuel pressure.
