Timing Belt &water Pump Time...

Post by Eddystone »

1998 V70 non-Turbo (no variable valves) Four questions:

1. I have a brand new Gates water pump in my parts collection. I suppose some will tell me to throw it in the trash, but still looking for opinions...
2. What should be replaced? Cam seals?
3. Reputable brands okay or only OEM?
4. What tools do I need for this non-VVT car? (My '99 is VVT and will need to be done before long but not this minute.)

Note: The Gates water pump is left over from a kit I used to do a friends S40 many years ago when I had no idea that the car had variable valve timing. I have experience doing the job poorly without proper tools in a barn in a rural setting. Got the check engine light out by installing the belt ten or twenty times...

If it's similar to an 850 the worst part of the job is the T45 into the tensioner or roller or whatever it goes into.

The wp wasn't that big of a deal, I don't remember being tough, I can't remember if I used some sort of sealant on the bolts though, a permatex of sorts. Maybe.

He is pretty fancy, I think I used a couple quarters in the serp belt tensioner to move it. #poormansVolvo

Coming from an S40, you sure that water pump fits your 98 NA? I'd probably use it if it does, or buy a Hepu if it doesn't.

Front cam seals i still never touch unless they are leaking, regardless of mileage. If you do, they must be Corteco (or Volvo).

Tensioner (is yours hydraulic or mechanical? 98 is a split year) and rollers I would only buy Volvo or equivalent. Conti belt is 16 bucks.

For the T45 get an L-shaped torx and a foot of thin pipe to use as a lever arm on it. Wedge the T45 in before you try to loosen it and the fastener will come right off when you pull on the pipe.

Aisin is the brand of water pump to buy. Expect 25k life out of others

I would use a Conti belt, only , too.

hi i have to wonder if gates products in the usa differ from there uk product as i have fitted many on loads of different cars and never had any problems and even recently fitted a gates kit on my 850se na and was a pleasantly easy job all bar the hydraulic tensioner took a bit work getting it wound back in and took about an hour to fully compress without damaging it,then the small nail i used as the pin bent snapped and tensioner came right out again,2nd time was a doddle!
if you can afford oe equipment then that maybe best route but there are a few good pattern parts that work just as well and cheaper.good luck

Gates timing belts have been documented on this forum more than once to be bad out of the box and wander back and forth on the pulleys.

In general I consider Gates drive belts and thermostats and especially their automotive hoses to be high quality, but would not touch Gates for timing parts on an interference engine.

Should be identical to an 850. Its not a difficult job, just take your time, notate your timing, and double check everything. A Cam locking tool is nice, but not 100% necessary. I used the FCP euro oem kit. Continental Belt, Aisin water pump, and whatever pulleys and idlers. Make sure you get a short T-45 for that center bearing. That is a silly one. Oh and don't over tighten your water pump bolts. Because they will snap. ask me how I know...

It's the same pump, no doubt.

I notice Continental supplies a GMB pump in their kit. That's a $24 pump.

Engine Timing Belt Idler INA-5320317100 Ina logo $21.81
Engine Timing Belt Tensioner INA-5310090100 Ina logo $67.46
Engine Timing Belt Tensioner FEB-22143 Febi logo $94.99

Any idea why the FCP kits list two belt tensioners? Do you toss out the one you don't need, or is this just terminology.
This is the $400 kit they suggested with the blue Gates $122 timing belt (which I think might even be the wrong one).

In the kit listing above, the INA tensioner is the "tensioner roller", and the FEBI tensioner is the hydraulic tensioner.

So you figured out your car needs a hydraulic tensioner not the mechanical one?

I'd get this, $200 https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... kit252-oem.
