Just happened to come across a 2004 v70r with 150k miles. I’ve owned several Volvo’s but not an R. I’m going to take a look at it late this week. If anyone with experience with this model could give me advice on what to check I would greatly appreciate it
General thought on the model are welcome

Big things to consider on a VR:
1. Suspension - 4C shocks die at fairly low miles & are expensive and hard to find. Non-4C replacements are available but equally expensive & you'll have a significantly harsh ride ALL the time vs being adjustable.
2. Clutch - be very mindful of the clutch & wary of a leaky slave, trans must be removed entirely to replace either.
3. Engine - you'll read of cracked cylinder walls/sleeves. Do not overlook this topic. It'll behoove you to at least check compression and possibly leakdown, if the seller will allow it.

It'll be pretty obvious if the wagon has been cared for well, or thrashed.

Dont be put off if its hard to shift my 2001 was and a change to Redline MTL improved it alot..just make sure it doesnt jump out of gear, this is bad. Hold the clutch pedal down and test the throw out bearing for noise.

There doesn’t seem to be any middle ground of on Rs

Ran vin check on car. 2 owners. First owner owned for 8 years and full dealer service records for all years of ownership And 130k. 2nd owner lived in area,but cars fuel pump module was replaced in college town. Best I can tell car has been sitting for last two years, no state registration since 2017. Told it sat in auction house for over 1 year.

Spent a rainy Friday looking at this,I was hoping to buy it,but in the end I walked away. Airbag warning,window regulators not working, headlights not functioning where the first problems that greeted me. Electronic locks, and sunroof not working soon joined the list of need.
When I finally got the battery charged enough, I plugged in code scanner 29 codes popped up, some confirmed original problems.Brakes and suspension joined the list
I called my mentor, a owner of local shop that sells and services imports, mostly Volvo’s. Went thru the list and explained it sat in a field for at least one year behind an auction house. He told me get up out of the car and walk away..
The list of needs was beyond my financial and physical resources. I was hoping to use this car as a secondary car and make improvements on the fly.
The project was beyond my skills

too bad, would depend on the price and if you like a challenge?..the 6 speed R is very rare here in Australia.

What was the ask? People get crazy ideas about pricing on these

A pristine one will get 15k, so everyone who finds one thinks they can get 14k for a thrasher
